COMET ISON is halfway between the Sun and Earth

Don't do simple math of 12 days since Perihelion so 12 more days it will be here. ISON did a slingshot around the sun at a speed of 425,000 mph (684,000 kph). It is going far slower now, 124,000 mph (199,600k kph), so it's journey to just north of the Earth will take longer than the preceding 12 days. Comet ISON was traveling at 65,000 mph when it passed by Mars.


Comet ISON is still a comet. ISON is a mass of debris. ISON completely evaporated.

We've heard all of these put forth. Whatever is left of ISON is being tracked and it is halfway between the Sun and Earth.

"Comet ISON was discovered on September 21st 2012 by Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok, two Russian Astronomers of the ‘International Scientific Optical Network’. At the time of
discovery, ISON was over 584 million miles (6.29 AU) from the Sun."

"The discovery was made using the 0.4-meter (16 in) reflector of the International Scientific Optical Network (ISON) near Kislovodsk, Russia. Data processing was carried out by automated asteroid-discovery program CoLiTec. Precovery images by the Mount Lemmon Survey from 28 December 2011 and by Pan-STARRS from 28 January 2012 were quickly located. [This means images already taken BEFORE it was known to be a comet were located.] Follow-up observations were made on 22 September by a team from Remanzacco Observatory in Italy using the iTelescope network. The discovery was announced by the Minor Planet Center on 24 September. Observations by Swift in January 2013 suggested that Comet ISON's nucleus was around 5 kilometers (3 mi) in diameter. Later estimates were that the nucleus was only about 2 kilometers (1 mi) in diameter."

Answer: It travels from 460 million miles to 93 million miles covering a total of 460-93 = 367 million miles.

At a speed of 13 miles/sec, this takes 367,000,000/13 = 28 million seconds or 470,000 minutes.

At a rate of 51,000 kg/minute, it will loose M = 51,000 x 470,000 = 2.4x1010 kg.

This represents P = 100% x (2.4x1010/1.1x1016) = 0.0004% of the total mass!
