I keep rats as pets. How do they get this shit?

Pet rats or mice do not contract or transmit this virus. It seems to be something rats in the wild pick up - possibly from eating infected flesh of various dead animals which rats only resort to when they are starving.

If you or your kids have pet rats, keep them in glass-walled cages vs in wire type cages. This makes contact with a wild rat all but impossible. If you have a proper screen top on the glass cage, then it is impossible for a wild rat to get in and infect your pets. The other issue is if you are keeping pet rats, keep their cages clean and give them lots of fresh, clean food, and plenty of water. Do not let them go more than 2 days without changing the litter in their cage bottom.

And above all, do not keep them on a service porch or in the garage (even if it is heated) where wild rats might be able to get to their cages. Keep your pets in the house, preferably in an area that is busy and well occupied with people and other pets at all times. This makes exposure to wild rats very difficult - which of course is what you want to do.
