Eclipse of top section of the Moon?
I was walking out to my car and the moon caught my eye because it was cast in an orange glow. I immediately noticed the top third of the moon was covered in a shadow. This was not cloud cover since the sky was pretty clear and the arc caused by the shadow was clean and remained constant. This appeared to be an eclipse along the top of the moon.

The optics in the phone could not pick up the moon with all of the artificial lighting and was too low along the W->NW horizon by the time I made it home to snap with my dslr. This was observed ~@1:45a CST and a clear night in central Texas. Anyone else able to confirm?

Could be a shadow on your brain
"The world will soon wake up to the reality that everyone is broke and can collect nothing from the bankrupt, who are owed unlimited amounts by the insolvent, who are attempting to make late payments on a bank holiday in the wrong country, with an unacceptable currency, against defaulted collateral, of which nobody is sure who holds title."

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

The woman who is not pursued sets up the doctrine that pursuit is offensive to her sex, and wants to make it a felony. No genuinely attractive woman has any such desire. - H.L. Mencken, In Defense Of Women

Confirmed. Near Austin. There was a thin veil of cloud but the orange/rust color of eclipse was very visible.

Thanks for a constructive reply. I've seen the shadow with more of a 'diagonal' setting plenty of times. I've just never observed a shadow perpendicular across the top/bottom even when toward the horizon.

What I saw was the orangish hue on the "top" of the crescent, not the way it is "supposed" to be, but on the part farthest from the horizon as it was setting. There was a thin veil of cloud, with one thin dark band that bisected the moon in half, exactly parallel to the horizon. The clouds were thin except for this one band. I have never seen anything quite like it before EXCEPT when then was a partial eclipse.

Re: Eclipse of top section of the Moon?
Your observation is normal for this time of year.
We are almost at the Winter Solstice.

It's all to do with tilt of Earth, and the Set/Rise times of the Sun/Moon.

This phase of Moon at that particular angle won't occur for you in the Summer.
