a storm with THAT low of a pressure will build up a hell of a storm surge.

off topic but...

Sounds like utter chaos in much of S Bristol due to Cumberland Basin bridge failure. Shambles that such a major route falls victim to this.

BBC Radio Bristol ‏@bbcrb 13 min
Plimsoll Bridge broken since 4.20pm. Extensive queues in all directions. @BristolCouncil say diversion signs are up. No comment on repairs.

North Atlantic storm track really cranking up -- period of frequent, intense or deep low pressures. e.g. 7-day 926 mb [link to twitter.com (secure)]

That's too far ahead in these models to be worrying yet, but yes... yikes. It could be an interesting Christmas if a 930mb depression goes right across the West Coast. The storm surge near the focus would be immense.

I don't understand the meteorology behind these models, but it's striking how these storms seem to be insulating the area of the next one's formation from high pressure systems - it almost seems to be allowing them to build up and get larger and deeper each time. Surely this has got to be related to the Arctic low across the US, but a whole succession of these things just isn't normal...

Blustery weather heading to northern Lincolnshire as Storm Emily hits the UK

Strong winds and outbreaks of heavy rain are expected in northern Lincolnshire later this week as the so-called Storm Emily hits the UK.

Though the area is predicted to escape the worst of the bad weather, gusts of up to 50mph are possible on Wednesday evening and into Thursday.

Prepare for Storm Emily! Deadly 100mph gales and blizzards to hit Britain on Christmas Day

Forecasters gave the ominous double warning as two vast weather depressions edged towards the UK.

The second is expected to lead to an extremely stormy festive period over the entire country.

Hey Luis, great to see you're not giving up on the weather! hf I bet they all will then be on their merry way East over to us, providing positive temperatures and absolutely no snow for our Christmas. Which is on the 7th due some calender errors. That also means I won't get decent night skies for my astrophotography. Such a shame. It's already melting over here, well melting then freezing to make Moscow one large skating ring.

Unmentioned so far is the rain; there will be plenty of it. Pretty miserable Christams shopping for the SW, and for Scotland who expect snow and rain mix with those storm force winds...

Storm has been downgraded anyways for Thursday/Friday.

NI will get it most and parts of western scotland.

Other than that, there will be no snow, just plenty of wind and rain until at least the new year.

+VE all December, strong Vortex.

926 will never happen, and there wont be sustained hurricane force winds, but it will be strong, and it will be windy.

You are right with the 5 storm systems though, its' looking like a grim xmas for the UK.

The main system is xmas eve/day and boxing day, thats the one to watch out for.

Anyways, don't worry, it's going to be very windy for NI Wednesday and Thursday, no doubt about that, but not sustained 100mph... We think between 60-70mph GUSTS are a potential, so very strong, but it's been downgraded over the last few hours...

I'll even draw on to show it..

Second one is showing Gusts of 75mph Western Scotland...

GFS, ECMWF, JMA all disagree on the location of the lows final position as well. Wouldn't like to be a TV forecaster.. It's rather going to batter somewhere, or just end up with 50MPH winds.

[link to f1.nwstatic.co.uk]

952mb LP, which is low, but not 926mb or 943mb... Hence the downgrade in force.

I must stress though, it's mainly the GFS that's downgraded it... ECMWF and NAE still have it powerful.
