Quoting: swansong What...you don't think 3 is enough? Need more? I'm sorry if I offended. I think the number of shots is important for its own sake, and different as a line of questioning from that of why people didn't (seem to) call during the first barrage. Counting the shots involves a lot of repeated listening, technical and physical discussions on sound characteristics, etc. I think it's too narrow a science, personally, to include in a general discussion of why people wouldn't be calling 911 when shots were fired. |

Thats being generous Quoting: ACG 20306206 If you want to clarify, simply feed the audio in a shot analysis software. Most the SHOTS you think you hear is pulses of air from breathing. Aw hell no. There are 10 shots in the last 5 seconds of Halstead's call alone. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 47123839 United States 12/17/2013 07:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I hear what seems to be shots. I also hear heavy breathing and wanna know what else is odd? The heavy breathing does not match Halsted's talking I didn't say there were no breathing sounds, I said THOSE are no breathing sounds (being emphatic about the gun shots not sounding like breathing). Sorry if it was confusing. |

She's exhaling harder than she's inhaling, to my ears. Sounds like I sound when I'm freaked. I don't think her call is fake. I just don't know what is actually frightening her. I've heard that tone of panic in a voice (and generated it myself). But again, that has nothing to do with whether or not the entire story is accurate. For all we know this phone exchange took place a decade ago. |

Whether their blanks or not is hard to tell, but in at least one instance I'm pretty sure I heard the characteristic whine of one flying past the phone. For reasons I'm too embarrassed to detail at the moment, I have heard that noise, up close and personal (stupid ignorant young person thing). |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 71073009 United States 02/29/2016 12:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Having taken an ear break for a few months, it's very interesting to now come back to the shots, in particular to do so having lined them up in an audio editor so that the sound of each shot can be examined across multiple calls. In some cases, you can't hear an actual shot (or there will be an artifact too faint to be sure), but you can hear that particular caller's verbal reaction to the shot (and that shot itself is clearly audible in another call). In some cases it sounds very much like shooters exchanging fire, or two shooters shooting in different parts of the building simultaneously, or one shooter using different weapons in rapid succession. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 71073009 United States 02/29/2016 01:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | One last thing for any of you listening to the audio: cellphones are very, very good at making you think you're listening to both sides of a conversation at once. The handoff between Caller A and Caller B is so fast, that the ear literally thinks you can hear both people (and their environments) at once, but you can't, really. In some cases, for example, you'll see a dispatchers audio go flat--the caller's side of the conversation is taking over, but the noise that made that happen is so faint you can't hear it as anything more than a whisper or the faintest "whoosh" sound. Once you're used to the sound of a shot taking over the conversation, however, you'll recognize it in many cases. And then when that sound is confirmed by a loud shot on some other call, you know you have it. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 71073009 United States 02/29/2016 02:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Very interesting - in some series of shots, the Female B talking to Nadeau always has a faint version of the shot before the sound reaches Beth. Sigh. A real audio expert would know what to do with this. This is EXACTLY why Sedensky destroyed that school. The exact pattern of shots and echoes and calibers and cellphone models could be reproduced over time, and a reconstruction of the actual shootings produced. But, you know, what investigation into a mass murder wants that. Smh. |
