...

Maybe they were trying to figure out how to present the truth to the people, now that they had time to confirm with the Hubble, that it indeed was an intelligent controlled object(s).

Can you imagine that? And that is what Obama will talk about at 2pm ET? Oooh, wouldn't that be wonderful.

ET's at 2pm ET. Yes that would surely be something indeed. rockon

Re: NASA Predicts Comet ISON Is Still Dead ~ But The Evidence Is Far From Conclusive
"On December 18, 2013, the Hubble Space Telescope tried to observe Comet ISON one last time. As many people expected, there is no evidence of Comet ISON in these images."

There was some uncertainty in where Hubble should point to recover the comet because no observations showed the comet since soon after perihelion.

According to astronomer Hal Weaver, who devised Hubble's strategy, there were two likely locations of the comet, predictions based on previous positions measured when the comet was still visible.

Dr. Weaver also estimates that the faintest objects Hubble could see in these images would be about 25th magnitude. This means that Hubble could have seen comet fragments larger than about 500 feet (160 meters) in diameter.

We can't completely rule out the possibility that something is left of the comet. After all, it was seen after its passage close to the Sun, but disappeared not long after.

This material would still exist, but is likely very diffuse gas, dust, and very small pieces spread over an extremely large area.

 Quoting: Smashed~4~Dooom

Thread: Comet ISON's debris is following the original orbit of the comet.
They pointed at two adjacent fields where the comet should be, there's nothing there. Empirical evidence shows that the debris cloud continued to follow the expected trajectory. Outgassing ceased at perihelion, which would minimize perturbations from outgassing. Whatever fragments are left are small - if a ~3km nucleus or larger were intact, even if it were not outgassing, it would be detectable by amateur surveys. Hubble's observations rule out anything larger than about 150 meters by my calculations, in close agreement with their own estimate of 160 meters.

Well they can't find nothing.

Even if it was just a 3km nucleus, there has to be remnants.
 Quoting: BadMoonRisen

R = 10^(0.2 *(m_sun - m))*rh*delta/sqrt(A*Phi)
where
R = radius of target
m = magnitude of target
m_sun = apparent mag of the sun
rh = heliocentric distance of the target in AU
delta = distance between the observer and target in AU
A = albedo
Phi = phase function
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

Plugging in the numbers.
m_sun = -26.78
m = not detected, limiting magnitude about 25. I was going to guess the limiting magnitude would be about 26, but decided to wait for them to release the images. I wasn't too far off.
rh = .803 AU
delta = .4786 AU
A = Between .02 and .06 for a typical comet ( [link to www.physics.ucf.edu] ) but let's be conservative and say it's an unusually blacker than normal comet and take half the minimum value, so .01
Phi = .0281 (alpha of 97 degrees, beta of .02)
This yields a maximum radius of anything undetected in the images of 1.01019 x 10^-09 AU which works out to about 151 meters, very close to NASA's own estimate of 160 meters.

So there could be hundreds of fragments of Ison up to a size of 150m. but we have no clue where they are?

Are we supposed to be reassured by that?
