By the year 355 CE, the Roman Empire had expanded westward first conquering Gaul (France) and then Briton. The Romans then ventured northward in an attempt to conquer Alba (Scotland) before continuing westward to conquer the adjacent emerald isle called Eriu (Ireland). Torna knew from the moment he found the abandoned newborn baby in the deep forests that he was being protected and guided by the forest spirits for some great task. An abandoned newborn, found in the deep forests, reared by a poet, protected and guided by the forest spirits. Would the baby become savior for the people of Eriu and stop the Roman Empire from their ever-expanding reign of tyranny? Torna only knew that he and his wife were to do their part and raise the child as their own and they named him Niall. Niall’s path was up to the spirits of the oak trees who were involved in the destiny of all. "Do only that, which would be acceptable to all mankind." |

He is known in folklore as a raider of the British and French coasts. The chronology of Keating's Foras Feasa ar Éirinn broadly agrees, dating his reign from 368-395 CE, and associating his raiding activities in Britain with the kidnapping of Saint Patrick. Niall was supposedly slain either in the English Channel or in Scotland. His descendants were the most powerful rulers of Ireland until the 11th century (Family Tree DNA Report 2013). The title king of Tara represented a very old ideal of sacred kingship in Ireland. It had a mythical quality stretching back deep into the ancient times. The following story is a fictional account inspired by the traditions and legends passed down from ancient Ireland. Niall unified all of Ireland and Scotland. He then fought the Roman Empire by conducting pirate raids in Roman Briton and drove the Roman legions out. Once he had accomplished that, he moved on to France to attack the Romans there and would have continued if he had not been killed from behind by traitors in his own ranks. He was considered the "Alexander the Great" of Ireland! Fascinating history for those of us from Ireland! "Do only that, which would be acceptable to all mankind." |
