The list below are the earthquakes who started after the mainshock of M5.1. The last 3 earthquakes have occurred at a shallower depth of 11 km (please be aware that these are preliminary data who can be adjusted later on).

It looks like everything is getting calmer again.
Be aware also that the CHIE seismograph (in fact the CTIG or Tigaday) is not sensitive enough to capture the earthquakes who appear in the IGN list, partly because of the distance of the epicenter to the seismograph.

2013-12-27 19:08 UTC
Continuing aftershocks with almost NO impact on the island. As this is probably not a tectonic quake (based on the location of the epicenter), people at both La Palma and El Hierro should be careful to stay away from steep slopes as rockfall can also occur with less strength earthquakes. Another reason to be careful is that the epicenter of the new earthquakes will not necessarily occur in the same area out of the sea. Inside your houses you should certainly FIC all heavy objects to avaoid that they fall on the ground (something which happens often with strong earthquake shaking).
The earthqake was felt as a MMI V (moderate shaking) in the El Golfo area and as a III (weak shaking) at La Palma. (data from IGN)
We welcome (tambien en Espanol) your experience if you have felt this earthquake. Click here to find the form and to watch more maps of the earthquake.

The roads from Frontera to Sabinosa and from Pozo de la Salud to Lomo Negro are currently closed for traffic. This means that people who were visiting the beaches of Arodal and Arenas Blancas (Frontera area) are currently trapped at these locations.

It's the area of the EQ that is of interest.

Re: 5.3 canary islands
Hmmm, seems to be 2 earthquakes (4 seconds apart). Not on the same location either. One was near one island (Frontera) and the other near Santa Cruz de la palma (and different depths).

There is is hopefully just another volcano growing, but 5.3 / 5.4 cannot be a good sign!!

In analyzing the epicenters of the aftershocks, we have to mention that the current depth of 11 km is shallower than the depth of the earthquakes who occurred during the last crisis in May. The seismicity occurred at that moment in the (more or less) same area at depths deeper than 15 km. Did anything happened on the sea floor in the epicenter area. We do not think so, but nobody will know until the sea can be monitored during daylight.
The distance from the epicenter to the western edge of the island (Lighthouse area) is 14 km and the depth of the sea floor is 2950 meter!.

Lets go..Ocean douching! w/salt!

Around this time of the year many Britons look towards the Canary Islands for a sunshine break. What most don't know, however, is that on one of the Canary Islands lies a major global catastrophe in the making, a natural disaster so big that it could flatten the Atlantic coastlines of Britain, Europe, North Africa and the United States of America and cause enormous damage to London and other UK cities. Scattered across the world,s oceans are a handful of rare geological time-bombs which, once unleashed, create an extraordinary phenomenon, a gigantic tidal wave, called a Mega Tsunami. These are able to cross oceans and ravage countries on the other side of the world. The word Tsunami derives from the Japanese for harbour wave. They are normally generated by offshore earthquakes, sub-marine landslides and undersea volcanic activity, and range from barely perceptible waves to walls of water up to 300 feet high.

Recently, scientists have realised that the next Mega Tsunami is likely to begin on one of the Canary Islands, off the coast of North Africa, where a wall of water will one day race across the entire Atlantic Ocean at the speed of a jet airliner to devastate the east coast of the United States, the Caribbean and Brazil.

Dr Simon Day, who works at the Benfield Greig Hazards Research Centre, University College London*, says that one flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma, in the Canaries, is unstable and could plunge into the ocean during the volcano's next eruption.

Dr. Day says: "If the volcano collapsed in one block of almost 20 cubic kilometres of rock, weighing 500 billion tonnes - twice the size of the Isle of Wight - it would fall into water almost 4 miles deep and create an undersea wave 2000 feet tall. Within five minutes of the landslide, a dome of water about a mile high would form and then collapse, before the Mega Tsunami fanned out in every direction, travelling at speeds of up to 500 mph. A 330ft wave would strike the western Sahara in less than an hour."

Europe would be protected from the fiercest force by the position of the other Canary Islands, but the tsunami would still bring 33ft waves to Lisbon and La Coruña within three hours.
