Dogs Poop in Alignment with Earth's Magnetic Field | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 52258225 Australia 01/01/2014 06:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Dogs seem to have an awful lot of ritual before hunkering down and soiling the sidewalk. It’s not uncommon to see a dog owner—plastic bag in hand—rolling his eyes as his furry companion sniffs and spins, getting just so before hunkering down to do the least considerate thing possible. Quoting: DoorBert But for whatever its worth, all that spinning is far from arbitrary. What dog owners witness is a small and furry version of the aurora borealis and a link between species and environment that’s as holistic and beautiful as a dog pooping can be. A team of Czech and German researchers found that dogs actually align themselves with the Earth’s magnetic field when they poop. Proving at least that they’re really devoted to their work, the researchers measured the direction of the body axis of 70 dogs from 37 breeds during 1,893 defecations and 5,582 urinations over the course of two years, and found that dogs “prefer to excrete with the body being aligned along the North-south axis under calm magnetic field conditions.” They fittingly published their results in the journal Frontiers in Zoology. My pups always seem to squat facing north. WILD! Thanks, OP! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Resident Led Zeppelin Expert (ask me anything!) GroundHogDay User ID: 34584571 United States 01/01/2014 07:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Why, I'm practically salivating over this new data! Had a look at the pdf at the link and: "In contrast to a human, the dog is relying also on its nose and its ears (in some breeds even more than on its eyes) when monitoring its surroundings - so we may expect that the dog heads with its nose and pinnae against the wind" They're just staying upwind of the smell!!! When our dog was young, I actually made a spread sheet (insert pun here) of her daily defecations. I think the average was about 4X daily. I do not recall seeing any particular orientations, however, did seem to notice that if there was any 'interest' in the area, that was the position most likely facing. Definitely agree with the 'ritual' part. Today is yesterday's tomorrow. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 18009664 United States 01/01/2014 09:58 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Great humor. Because some countries no longer have any real scientists. Dumb'd down, too. Scientists are brains on the .gov 'scientific grant' (millions of $'s) dole. Countries pay scientists to do 'research' they don't leave the country and go work for someone else doing illegal/legal research. Also, many work for corporations to skew data for the sake of profits in the millions of $$$$. Deaths/Class Actions Lawsuits = Corporations gone amuck with 'scientific data'. ---> Remember - follow the $. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 47104454 United States 01/01/2014 09:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I wouldn't doubt this. Dogs (ALL animals, actually) are more in tune with the earth's "vibrations" than humans. Someone suggested making a "spreadsheet" documenting and calculating this "evidence." I'd be interested (IF there's any truth to this) to watch and see if dogs are shifting their stances, based on shifting poles? |
Carnac The Magnificent User ID: 14415865 United States 01/01/2014 10:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks. Now every time the dog takes a shit I'm going to be compelled to pay close attention, take mental notes of the dogs orientation, and ponder what I've witnessed rather deeply. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 49801954 So true... taking my dog for a crap will now require as much mental exertion as physical. ... and I need to get a device to accurately determine wind direction... I always thought they were shitting down wind and I am not so easy to change my opinions on such useless matters. My lab is not as picky as that mutt I had back in the 90's. That dog would sniff around for 10 minutes before finally dropping her load. It never made sense why her nose would lock on a spot -- and then the crap would land a good 18" inches behind her. It is not like she found the spot with her nose, then carefully placed her asshole over it. Have a nice day = GFY. GFY = Go Fuck Yourself. If this offends you then have a nice day. |
