Why, I'm practically salivating over this new data!
When our dog was young, I actually made a spread sheet (insert pun here) of her daily defecations. I think the average was about 4X daily. I do not recall seeing any particular orientations, however, did seem to notice that if there was any 'interest' in the area, that was the position most likely facing.
Definitely agree with the 'ritual' part.
