It makes me laugh every time I see one of the commercials to visit California or Florida on TV here in the UK; most people I talk to say they would never consider visiting the US any longer. I presume this ruling will be appealled. Elsabiades.. |

User ID: 42263367 United States 01/03/2014 11:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Let me make a point here: When martial law is declared and tyrannical laws are enacted; what is your remedy? And, from a practical standpoint, where do you stand? The criminals in Washington know this: it takes TIME to have a matter heard before the highest court in the land. Sometimes years; remember that Lincoln repeal the Right of Habeas Corpus? It took years before the U.S. Supreme Court held his action Unconstitutional. As such, when tyranny comes we will suffer for years before that matter can be reviewed and reversed. This is one reason why "separation of power" is ineffectual. Elsabiades.. |

If only 10% of those travelers had laptops that is less than .0001% and the real figure is probably far lower than that. Then coupled with the fact that they would have a target group they were searching for so not really a problem at all. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 51790415 United States 01/03/2014 11:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.bbc.co.uk] Quoting: Cavaignac A federal judge in New York has ruled authorities can seize travellers' laptops at the border without citing a legal reason, suspecting the traveller of a crime, or explaining themselves in any way. What happens if they take yours? The news over the past year has been filled with stories of the National Security Agency (NSA) and its surveillance operations and the risks to online privacy. The release of documents obtained by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden sheds new light on its global electronic spying programme. Yet authorities can also find out about you in a more traditional manner - by seizing your possessions at the border. I just remove the harddisk from my laptop and replace it with a cleaned hard disk with nothing on it when I travel or cross the border. Everything else I just either fedex to my hotel or download via ssh. I no longer trust Customs or Border patrol. The fact that they can seize my computer without warning already tells me not to travel with any electronics. Anything I download or get from across the border, I will just Fedex my stuff on a mini-sd card hidden away in paper documents. Last time I traveled, I just sewed on the mini-sd to my pants. 64GB can hold a lot. I then completely wipe the harddisk. |

No its not OK but I was talking about perspective, too thick to understand that are you. Given there are real threats out there how do you propose to deal with those threats? Lets see you come up with he answers. Do you have locks on your car , doors to you're house why is that is it because there are perceived and real threats. Or do you think it's OK to remove all that security? I don't like the searches at the airports, treated like a criminal when you're not and even if you ignore the fake war on terror we still need levels of security in our lives like it or not. So what is the answer big mouth? |

I couldn't imagine as my entire career is on it. This is just modern day espionage. They just take your laptop outright to learn all the industrial secrets you may have. Russia has been doing this at the border for a long time and so has China. The US doing it is just playing catchup with the rest of them doing this shit. We used to be a bastion to freedom and showing people how to do things, now we're no worse than China. Europe used to do it too, but I've rarely heard of cases there like that lately, but it has happened and they can take and seize your electronics just the same as well over there. |
