Well that's not true. Farm kids spent plenty of nights out laying on the grass observing the moon and the stars. At least all the farm kids I know did.

Re: So all these threads about the top of the moon missing... then I noticed THIS. [nothing serious]
I remember seeing the moon looking like the Cheshire cat. Woke up and saw it out the window - it had to been 2007 or so? It was slightly tilted though not straight up and down.

Last night I saw the moon as it rose - it was a normal crescent (on the right side) with sun setting just ahead.
Around 9pm or so (estimated) it was a 'smile' - horns up.
Sun was now below earth.

It may have done the same in 2007 only I didn't stay up to see it.

It could be something to do with position or tilt - not really sure - Pic I saw ususally showed the 'horns' tilted in N.Hemishphere but straight up in Equator. But I don't have a ton of time to research it exhaustively. I know the Inuits are insisting that something is up with the Sun setting position. Again, not really read up on that.

Cool picture though, it is unsettling to wake up and see it thru' window - prob why I still remember it.

I'll be 48 this year and I can remember as a child talking to my grandmother about the "Man in the Moon" lying on his back taking a nap. The moon goes through these phases. It's a natural progression as it orbits the earth and the earth wobbles on her axis. It was a funny thing as a kid to think there really was a Man in the Moon and he slept during the winter :D
 Quoting: Éireann

There is no man in the moon anymore, I am 32 and they used to say that when I was a kid too, you could kinda see a face on the moon...its not a face anymore now that it has turned 90 degrees...it definitly does not look the same.

Because when I layered the photo to put the stars back in I was not paying attention. Used the bleed trick to bring the moon onto the star layer.

If you had my eyesight, you'd never notice the difference even with the change in the moon's position. Being blind has it's advantages.

you guys seem to think, that the moon will look the exact same way, on a particular day of the month, every dammed year.

The phase of the moon and how tilted it looks is dependant on the position of the Earth, Moon and Sun.

The next thing you know you will all be passing out with giddiness because Lunar or Solar eclipses don't occur on the same days each year too.

Next thing you will be here freaked out because you poured out some cereal and it doesn't sit in the bowl the same as it did the day before.

Also guys on the other thread Astro put up. He got debunked. There is a cresent but NOT THIS TIME OF YEAR IN THAT POSITION.

ALMANAC. Do we need to bring that over here to this thread. Wrong time of year for the smile cresent.

Farmer's is wrong about that part, the point was to show that they do indicate it can happen. They didn't do enough research on how often it really can happen though. It's completely normal, even in January:

How many times do I have to say this before you get it? MOON PHASE CALENDARS DON'T SHOW THE EFFECTS OF FIELD ROTATION. That depends on your location and the time of the day you are observing, neither of which are "known" factors for the calendar, so it just displays the phase, not the apparent orientation.

You could see the Milky Way clearly, and "shooting stars".

A lot more people don't.

I'll cede to your experience in these matters. Still doesn't look right to me though. Almost as if the moon is "too" crisp or something, not just because of the hot pixels or whatever. Again, you are more experienced with Astrophotography so you make the call.
