I'm probably going to get chewed up and spit out for this opinion, but we really need to do something about the mental health crisis in this country.

We need to stop pretending that the dangerous mentally ill have any business interacting with the rest of civilization and putting us all at risk because they are incapable of controlling themselves.

First, I have an issue with cops abusing their power. This kid didn't have to be shot. There was no reason for it.

That being said, we need to stop acting like those with organic mental defects that prevent them from controlling their behavior in what society would consider a sane way deserve to be treated like everybody else, who can tell right from wrong and behave accordingly.

These people put everyone at risk.

We need to have better systems in place for keeping them out of the general population of people.

We recently had a situation in Utah where a family freaked out because a teacher's aide pushed their autistic kid out of a classroom - because he'd been hitting and slapping other students and refused to follow directions.

Why does EVERYONE have to be in danger of physical assault because someone else's brain misfires?

How stupid is it really to let a tiny segment of society hold everyone else hostage with their unstable, uncontrollable behavior??

We need more in-patient facilities and better community resources to keep the population in general safe from violent offenders. They shouldn't get some kind of free pass just because they have are organically insane rather than just antisocial or choose to act out. It's bullshit.

I have a cousin (female) who worked with violent, mentally-ill adult males. Some had been convicted of crimes, some skirted conviction based upon their diagnosis.

She got her ass kicked - broken jaw one time - several times by these guys.

She spent her time advocating their rights to live in and amongst the community as long as they had care-givers.

Caregivers like her - who they could easily overpower.

She wanted them living in residential facilities in residential neighborhoods.

These violent, generally both physically and sexually, men.

She thought it was their 'right' as American citizens.

We didn't speak for years over it.

Finally her husband put a stop to her working - he said he couldn't handle the the stress of worrying about her every day any more.

She really thought she was doing something good, but these were people that despite medication and mental health intervention and legal watchdogs and everything else society could throw at them were always going to be dangerous and violent.

Why should our kids be at risk just so these guys can live a 'normal' life that will never resemble normalcy based upon the horrors in their own minds??

I mean, it's shitty for them that their brains work the way they do. I'm sorry they can't control their violent impulses and are at the mercy of biology we're only just beginning to understand. But my sympathy does not extend as far as putting innocent people at risk just so they can feel normal.

It's not right or fair or just to the majority to let KNOWN dangerous mentally ill people just walk around unchecked. Sorry.

The Boiling Spring Lakes Police Chief has cleared his officers of any wrong doing at the scene. Chief Brad Shirley says an internal review shows his officers did not break any laws. They responded to help Vidal's family, during what they called a schizophrenic episode.

Vidal's family has hired a team of lawyers. They're calling the investigation a "cover-up" by law enforcement and the District Attorney's Office.

Attorney James Payne represents the alleged shooter in this investigation. Payne would not go into detail about what happened or even name his client, but maintains that his client didn't do anything wrong.

"We have full faith and confidence in all agencies involved," said James Payne. "To say it's a cover up is saying that these men and women lack integrity and that's not true."
