Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday bash invitations with notice of what's included and what's not
Invitations for the First Lady’s January 18 party tell guests to ‘eat before you come’ and ‘practice your dance moves.’

The party’s fitting title is ‘Snacks & Sips & Dancing & Dessert,’ sources told the Chicago Tribune.

The dancing party will be light on food, but heavy on dancing, perhaps in a nod to Ms Obama’s ongoing physical fitness campaigning.

The entertainment and guest list are a closely-guarded secret, the Tribune noted.

Snip from The Blaze 11 hrs ago:

The Washington Post interviewed several party experts on the matter.

“To ask people to ‘eat before you come’ is not the way I would have done it,” Colin Cowie, celebrity party planner, told the Post. “I always think of the food. When it comes to making people feel welcome we give them great music, a well-stocked bar, and excellent food — and you do it abundantly.”

Re: Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday bash invitations with notice of what's included and what's not
In looking for some of Jackie Kennedy's planning for her birthday, well, I found none. I wanted to see what her style was. Maybe she didn't relish in her very own birthday! Imagine!

I did, however, find a website with lots of her style notes, regarding dressing for the occasion. And, at the very bottom of this page, there are 85 pics of her life of style.

I'm pretty sure the dudes won't be interested in this, but, well, I am absolutely - - - fascinated!

“I Don’t Think It’s Rude, But…” Etiquette Experts Perplexed Over First Lady’s Party Plans
(snippets thereof)

“I don’t think it’s rude, but I do think it’s a little ... different than what people are used to. How’s that for putting it delicately?” joked Lizzie Post, great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post and co-author of “Great Get-Togethers: Casual Gatherings and Elegant Parties at Home.”

“My advice to people would be not to put ‘eat before you come’ on an invite,” Post said. “And this is not a specific etiquette thing. To me it just sounds so instructive. I’m still in the camp of letting them know what will be served at the party instead of what they should do.”

I keep thinking of Jackie Kennedy and what she would do. As I said before, I could not find any evidence online that Jackie ever had a birthday party for herself - only the President, her husband.

Then I found some unpromulgated manners for food only on the invitation:

“My advice to people would be not to put ‘eat before you come’ on an invite,” Post said.

I like manners a lot. Nothing impresses me more than manners and good form. And I believe I am not alone. This is lacking on both counts IMO.

If I had a zillion (or however many) assistants, I would try to make one of them knowledgeable in things like this. Jackie had one. And I thought in the beginning of this admin., this couple were compared to the Kennedys.

In a way, I kind of feel sorry for them. Much like Lee Harvey Oswald, they are beginning to understand that they have been set up to the the fall guy/gal for the destruction of an entire country. They well know that they will soon be the most hated people on earth. Party like it's 1999...

I can't believe I'm defending her, but my first impression is that she's aware of the scrutiny over how much this is already costing us taxpayers. Maybe, somewhere deep inside, she's being a frugal First Lady?
