Back then those types of temps were normal. I grew up in Maine when 40 below was normal much of the winter and us kids still played outside in it.

I think it is still too early to say if this is a run away effect.

Mother nature has a way of adjusting and balancing herself out in the long run.

I suspected the polar vortex would rotate around and cycle every couple weeks.

I have been watching and studying weather for many years.

As the sun eventually heats up the northern hemisphere, the temperature extremes, for this year, at least will subside.

However the front-generation mechanism will still be present.

Cold, polar air mixing with very warm-moist air from the GOM

My biggest worry is in March.

This will very likely result in massive severe weather outbreaks.

Widespread tornadoes anywhere from east of the Rockies.

Global Cooling: Is an Ice Age Coming?

It wasn’t supposed to happen: a ship full of scientists and environmentalists sent to the Antarctic to find melting ice from global warming got stuck in frozen ice from fearsome cold.

Then, the rescue ship got stuck in the ice, too.

Critics liken the incident to the climate change movement itself: stuck in denial over the fact that the climate is not getting warmer but seems to be getting much colder.

The climate is changing, but it’s not changing the way climate change crowd predicted it would. Nature has made a mockery of global warming, so who are the real climate deniers?

The few decades of "global warming" was little more than a hiccup. We are heading back to more normal temp ranges -- which are colder than what we have seen for the last 25 years.

Does not mean I have to like the cold.

Great thread. I was about to post somthing along the lines of this. This weekend and through mid week next week expect a warm up since the arctic and Sub tropical jet streams will be reloading. The influence of the stratospheric warming is that has been occuring in the upper levels will take hold after January 18th or so. The upcoming pattern will be much of the same as it is now. The polar vortex will be reestablishing itself in this time period while the sub tropical jet will become active once again. We will also have blocking in place which is a KEY warning sign for winter storms in the east once again. So those who want a quick ending to the winter in the east will be very disappointed.

Yeah I remember the winters of the 1970's and 80's, shit was intense...

When all the climatologists (a new field then) were saying we were moving into a new ice age...

then we go from twenty years of hard winters into twenty years of mild winters and everyone screams the planet is heating up and it could threaten life on Earth...

So now the cycle rolls around to cooler again, and I notice some climatologists are already warning about the impending ice age again...

They understand this is all a cycle, but if they're not scaring you out of your money then what good are they really?!?!?

The AO (Polar Vortex) is going positive (strengthens over the north pole) for the next week then dives back down after January 15th.

My local forcast shows Jan 11-15 all with daily highs above freezing. 12th is going to be 5c/41f. Unusually warm for Atlantic Canada, I don't recall the last time we had a thaw in the middle of January.

This is some bad stuff happening and this early in there too I know snow and that is expected for winter but to this extreme we have been seeing lately is something else when this polar vortex sweeps across to Europe it will warm up and the snow will turn to rain and I don't think the UK can bare much more Rain nor the rest of Europe the rivers a swollen massively just hope this weather pattern we have been seeing recently lets up for a week or two or else a lot of people could end up being in a lot of trouble...

Relentless battering of Storms in Europe and Relentless battering of Chills in USA I expect a Russian to jump in at some point and say its nothing but the places being hit even if it has been witnessed in the past before aren't as well prepared as we should be look at the UK a couple years back Snow drifts and the whole country blanketed in Ice and the Country came to a stand still...

Hope the grids in the US can hold...

Strataspheric warming over the pole is the only thing that can push that vortex down on us so why aren't they saying whats causing the heating?

Because climatology is a sub-branch of geology and the rock tumblers are just a notch above biologists in my opinion. My education is in chemistry, physics, and engineering. Biology is where the want to be doctors float to trying to get a slot in medical school the easy way.

And Geology ain't much higher in my summation, lots of hypothesis, but most of their 'theories' border on anthropological hubbub. Lots of rote memorization as well, the only saving grace of geology is they actually go further than Calc 1 in most universities while the vast majority in biology think calculus is the stuff that makes kidney stones.

They laugh about Geologists in the oil patch, the joke is it's the only job where you can be wrong 100% of the time and still get paid...

Apparently Climatologists are the same way...
