OP, try the search on top of the page for bird flu. This has been widely discussed here already, and I'm not trying to reduce your topic in any way; just not feeling like repeating myself (and I assume others feel the same way too).

Re: food shortage? is it coming
Word up!!! Storing food an essentials is the way to go, and not for woo-woo shit either. For example, I'm heading for personal bankruptcy inside of 6 months (just waiting to hear how much bac0k tax I owe, then it's time to file) but I am quite solvent right now. I'll be dumping a lot of my cash on hand into food, shoes, clothing, toiletries, etc. These types of items are exempt from seizure under the bankruptcy laws of my province so having a lot of that shit stored up will make weathering the BK period a lot more pleasant that's for sure!

There is already a food "shortage" for
millions of people of the world who do not
have money. Just make sure you have plenty
of money, no problem.

Re: food shortage? is it coming
It is a prudent thing to do, stocking up on food and a Big Berkley water purifer is also a good idea. Just in case, something goes down you (weather/flood/earthquake etc etc) should be able to take care of yourself and loved ones for at least 2 to 3 weeks and not depend on the Goverment. I know, I worked for the goverment for 20 years in the military!!!

Re: food shortage? is it coming
Having money is not solution.. You can not eat money..

Store food, water, toilet paper, etc..
collidial silver, herbal remedies...

Do as much thinking about what it would be like to be on a long extended camping trip out in the middle of nowhere and you might have it covered.

Having put away food, water and other essentials could buy you some mighty precious time in a real crisis.

Last weekend I drove across the Sierra Nevada mountain range--beautiful! In the midst of all that beauty I thought about how little food is actually out there....

Yes, I saw a deer, here deer, here deery deer, I'm hungry and I want to eat you... deadhorse

Came home and went shopping at Costco again....it feels good to have a bunch of food.

Re: food shortage? is it coming
Ok, so what do you recommend we should stock up on, food wise? Mind you a lot of people like me and spouse live in a tiny apt. where storage is limited and should it come down to some other shit where we need to leave fast, I don't want to be carrying a bunch of heavy canned goods. So what do you recommend?

Re: food shortage? is it coming
Minimum of 3 months of as close to everyday food as you can store.

Canned meats, dry milk powder and some dehydraded egg mix are the NON normal stuff you will have to get, but other than that it is mostly just stuff you would buy to eat anyway.

Got a bread machine? Stock up on enough flour and ingredients that you need to make all the bread you would normally eat. A grain grinder and raw wheat stores better than flour (you can grind your own flour with that combo), but flour still stores OK ... just get a sifter so any bugs that get into it can be sifted out (it is still OK to eat if bugs get into it)

Have some way to filter and purify water ... even if it is just coffee filters and clorine bleach (get the ratio's you use for that ahead of time). Remember clorine bleach only has a shelf life of a few months so that should really be rotated about every 3 months or so (get the NON scented stuff) which isn't very expensive at about 99 cents for a BIG jug.

Also ... get a 5 gallon container of cooking oil from Sam's, Costco, or a restaurant supply co. You will NEED cooking oil particularly when you start baking and do NOT have margerine and butter around. A big 5 gal container will be OK in most climates for a couple of years before it starts to go rancid and only costs about $15.

Pasta will store for quite some time in an airtight 5 gallon conatiner (Lowes/Home Depot) and is a good way to also get your grains in a way other than bread. Boxes of cheap Mac & Cheese, egg noodles etc..

For prepackaged foods try to get stuff that only needs water. Instant mashed potatoes from restaurant supply houses usually only need water added, unlike the kind from the regular grocery stores. Same with pancake powder.

Peanut Butter is GREAT. Very nutrious and a normal everyday food. If you rotate your stock you can store a LOT of this great food. Same with spagetti sauce (you can use that as pizza topping mix or sauces for other foods)

3 Months is the MINIMUM everyone should have ... and plan on "company" at that.

3 Months of 3 meals a day ....

It sounds daunting but really isn't if you just factor in some everyweek and do a basic menu to drive your purchasing decisions. If you buy the BIG sales it actually isn't that expensive either.

Did I say THREE MONTHS yet?

3 Months ... go for it.

Re: food shortage? is it coming
MALU, thanks for the articles on the world food shortage. It's not news to me, because I read the articles long ago...but I needed a refresher on just how risky the food chain really is.

OP:
YES, store food and water and any other essentials you deem necessary for the benefit of yourself and your family. It won't matter how much money you possess if there's nothing at your grocery store to purchase in an emergency.

I just put out 22 tomato plants today (started from seed). I've got three kinds of beans ready to transplant. Got a host of other "goodies" ready to go. I don't have a traditional garden space. The lot is not large enough. Instead, I have containers that are sitting upon salvaged construction trailer stairs. We put together 7 sets of stairs. 3 sets have 5 steps, 2 sets have 4 steps, and 2 sets have 3 steps.

It's going to be a long, difficult summer (we are recently jobless), but with what we are storing and what we are growing, we won't starve. We might even lose a few pounds because we can't afford to eat out anymore. ppig

At this very moment, my 30yr. old dehydrater is cranking away in the dining room. Hubby dragged it out of the attic and we cleaned it up. Haven't used that big old avocado-green thing in over 15yrs. (does the color tell you anything?), and frankly we forgot we had it! Got it all spiffed up, checked the motor and the heating element, and we are good to go.

Our local Albertson's had a sale on celery...10 bunches for $10. I kept one bunch for the veggie bin in the fridge, and am drying the rest. It will take a few days to get all the moisture out. The house smells great! LOL! We are also dehydrating the celery leaves. They make wonderful additions to soups and dips.

I know this sounds weird, but there's something cheery in this kind of preparation. We are down to the bare nubbins, yet we are having a great time. I put in a cd, turn up the volume, and we get busy! Jimmy Buffett never sounded so good.

Re: food shortage? is it coming
Well I guess I'm screwed then. I have major gastrointestinal issues that I am being treated for. I cannot have any bread of any kind, let alone wheat, for that matter, thus no pastas, no dairy, no nuts, etc. What I am allowed is beef, chicken, veggies, some fruits, goat cheese, and not much more. And last I checked, they don't have dehydrated chicken and beef. If I don't follow this diet, I am in terrible pain. Any more suggestions? Thanks.
