....this rock is on a 3.17 year orbit and was closest to Earth on Dec. 26th. It's not ISON but how interesting.

The question is WHEN will this asteroid pose a thread to mother earth.

According to NASA, not earlier than 100 years.

no data or facts, just a reasonable guesstimate. and assuming it is making a bee-line for earth, which of course it is not. 22.5 days would be the absolute soonest it would arrive figuring 50k speed. probability being near zero however.

Wait a MINUTE!! maybe these asteroids are ISON debris. Notice how the cloer we got to the 10th of january the more asteroids start showing up on their NEA data.

There are four visitors reported flying inside a radius of ten lunar distances (LD) from Earth today. Intruder 2014 AW32 leaves the Earth-Moon system at 0515 UT. Further out, 2014 AE29 is outbound from 4.38 to 4.90 LD and risk-listed 2014 AD16 from 5.00 to 6.80 LD. And newly announced 2014 AZ32 comes its closest to Earth this time around, reaching 6.22 LD at 2350 UT.

Yes but there is a difference between thoughtful and plausible conspiracies, which exist, and the knee-jerk "NASA is evil" nonsense that keeps getting repeated here.

In almost every case where someone is suggesting NASA is diabolically hiding some data or omitting some other data, the truth ends up being much more mundane - either tech failures or just the sad but very non-diabolical incompetence of large government bureaucracy or, most often, the accuser has know idea what they are talking about and they are relying on the fact that their reader probably knows even less.

I think the fact that the government shifted space operations from the military to NASA around the same time that Operation Paperclip happened is suspicion enough.

A new, “potentially hazardous” asteroid has been discovered by one of NASA’s recently reactivated spacecraft – and it’s headed in Earth’s direction.

The new asteroid, called 2013 YP139, was spotted by NASA’s Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE), and marks the spacecraft’s first discovery since being resurrected last year.

According to the Telegraph, the asteroid is still 27 million miles (43 million km) away from Earth, but with a diameter of nearly half a mile (0.4 miles, to be precise), an impact with our planet would cause significant damage.

NASA estimates any asteroid with a diameter greater than 0.5 miles could create worldwide consequences upon impact.

The 2013 YP139 doesn’t quite raise concern to that level, but its trajectory has attracted the attention of NASA.

ISON was nowhere near the size of a planet.

The mass loss was 7 million POUNDS per hour, not tons.

Size estimates of ISON where around a diameter of 5 kilometers. Comets have a density around 0.5 grams per cubic centimeter. That is a mass of 261,000,000,000,000,000 grams. Roughly 288,000,000,000 tons.

Even if your 7 million tons per hour number was correct, it isn't, it would take almost 5 years to shed its entire mass at that rate.
