When I read the title I presumed it had happened in the UK - wouldn't have been so surprising, there's been a load of cases where patients have literally starved to death or died of thirst because they were just left. Welcome to healthcare under the NHS/Obamacare.

I thought an er has to treat everyone regardless of having insurance or not.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9097025

Nope. Found out the hard way in Florida when my husband had a piece of glass in his eye. They refused to see him when he couldn't produce $300 cash since he didn't have health insurance. He was fucking bleeding out of his eye. A week later a woman died walking home from that ER, fell in the ditch and died on the side of the road. Her boyfriend dropped her off at the ER, assuming she would be seen. When they turned her away she tried to walk home alone at 3 a.m. and died. This was a few years ago.

There are for-profit hospitals that can turn you away and say no.

There are nonprofit hospitals that do have to see everyone because they get gov't subsidies.

I want to know WHAT he died from! Were talking about a 30 y/o man with a RASH. What did he have that killed him in 8 hours? Was he contentious? Viral? Bacterial? One article said he had a history of drug use but had been clean for months.

I'm a nurse in large Canadian hospital, and all I can say is, I'm not surprised. Every hospital I've worked in has been WAY understaffed, and nurses are WAY overworked. I can't imagine what it's like south of the border.

Ideally, yes, a nurse should have checked on him, but guess what? We have no time. Our priorities are twofold -- making sure critical issues are taken care of first -- assessments, medications, etc etc etc (there are A LOT of etcs in nursing); and covering our asses legally through charting. If something wasn't charted, it's considered not done and we can lose our licenses over it. Rounds are supposed to be done every hour, but it doesn't happen. There is no time for that.

The ER is far worse than the medical or surgical units, which is why I left it. On top of the workload, you get violent patients, whiny patients, and people who literally think nurses are waitresses. Oh -- and people who claim to have chest pain when you know damn well they merely sprained their ankle (a lot of people abuse the Triage system).

Damn you are a catch, a gem. Being in the ER for more than a broken leg would put me in the ground, such a babypennywise

Skillfully weaving the web of bitter lies that lead to the abattoir

In the city of New York the summer of 1910 was signalized by the dismantling of the Elevated Railroads. The summer of 1911 will live in the memories of New York people for many a cycle; the Dodge statue was removed in that year. In the following winter began the agitation for the repeal of the laws prohibiting suicide which bore its final fruit in the month of April, 1920, when the first Government Lethal Chamber was opened on Washington Square.

My friends wife was in a automobile accident. She went to the emergency room. They looked her over and said she was fine so she went home, where she collapsed. She ended up with a damaged spine.
They sued the hospital and won. They got a good amount of money, but I'm sure she'd give it all back to walk again.

could've been worse, he could've been admitted in Burgaw:

Pipes burst at a healthcare facility in Burgaw Saturday, causing the ceiling to collapse in a patient's room. According to the Burgaw Fire Marshal, the call came in around 11:30 a.m

The NHS is mostly very good. It's only when you get into a highly "multi-cultural diversity" area that the problems begin. When the hospital/GP office is staffed primarily by native British, the quality of healthcare is second to none.

Obamacare has already started fucking shit up. A friend of mine has to get blood work done once a week, and he must show up an hour early to register because Obamacare dictates that his info must be entered each time instead of stored in the system.

“He was found stiff, blue and cold,” the employee said, speaking to ABC News on condition of anonymity. “He died because [there’s] not enough staff to take care of the number of patients we see each day. We need more staff at Saint Barnabas.”

Officials at the 461-bed facility said Verrier checked into the ER at 10 p.m. Sunday and was found dead at 6:40 the next morning.

I work in a hospital setting. There are not enough doctors anywhere in any hospital for the numbers that come in during cold and flu season.

The patients are triaged. If you are bleeding or have a life/limb/vision threatening injury, you go to the top of the triage list, no matter the folks in the waiting room that were there first.

So people can worsen while waiting........maybe they were very stable at the time of triage, but then worsened while waiting.

The doctors and nurses cannot take the time to "check on" folks in the waiting room when things are so busy.

It is up to the patient, their family, AND ALL THE PEOPLE SITTING IN THE WAITING ROOM WITH HANGNAIL ISSUES, to let the busy staff know if someone is worsening.

A lot of people bring themselves to the ED because they use it in place of a clinic. Their kids have a cold, or gods forbid, started vomiting 10 minutes ago. Or they want some pain drugs because they are junkies. Or they are the type that just like attention and come for "social" visits (because they can and we have to pay for it) and make up their symptoms.

Then you have the gang bangers and alcoholics/drug users/suiciders that get themselves beaten knifed or shot/drunk and in MVA/stoned out of their mind/on deaths door and they take up LOTS of valuable time that could be used to prevent someone from dying of the flu/sepsis/meningitis out in the waiting room.

Meanwhile the Triage staff has to sort all this out and make life and death decisions.

I repeat:
It is up to the patient, their family, AND ALL THE PEOPLE SITTING IN THE WAITING ROOM WITH HANGNAIL ISSUES, to let the busy staff know if someone is worsening.

If the waiting room was so busy, someone had to see that that guy was dying and just chose to ignore it. Trust me, if the medical staff had known, he would have gone to the top of the list.

Doctors are getting fed up, taking early retirement and leaving the profession or going part time as fast as they can. This trend started long before Obomacare. It started with DRG's back several decades ago. Now we have the middleman insurance companies dictating how we operate and corporations taking over medicine, making the life of most doctors and nurses bleak. It has been a long term plan. It is going to come back to bite the common man that let it happen.......as usual.

How do they know how long he was waiting if he was FOUND dead?

I think the latter would be they were watching him and counting the hours til the poor guy finally croaked

I am an RN at a Pennsylvania hospital.

Managers are cutting beds and frontline staff in order to deal with the financial implications of obamacare. Demand, is at an all time high. The throughput we deal with as doctors and nurses is impossible to manage.

Obamacare sets impossible targets for the hospitals to meet. And when the hospital fails, it gets fined.

It is getting scary out there.

Not surprising at all. This is what we get when the CEO's of these hospital corporations (who know NOTHING about healthcare) are raking in high 6 figure salaries, sitting in their comfy offices with full-time secretaries & assistants making decisions based solely on the monetary profits of their corporation.

Those in who do know healthcare are royally pissed off. It's totally ridiculous. Been there, done that & rejected that.

CEO's are the expendable middlemen. We must get rid of these blood suckers. They have discovered they can get rich quickly by doing what they do best, "Making decisions without having to take responsibility."

Sue the CEOs for making the decision to cut the staffing! Make them pay for "ignorant decision malpractice". A decision made by them without the knowledge necessary to make that decision. Pure ignorance with malice. It's all about money & profits. They must pay their own salaries. Right!

Just to add that government targets are what led to the disaster at a hospital in England called Mid staffs.

They were so hell bent on meeting financial targets set out by the government they were running 30 bed med surg units with one RN. They could have had better staffing but they didn't want to pay for it. Staff tried to blow the whistle and were ignored Thousands died. Google it.

When it first hit the news they tried to blame the frontline docs and nurses for being n"uncaring" leading to poor care. Then the shitty staffing levels were discovered. I know that when I have 5 critical patients at once I have to run past and ignore people lying in their own shit too.

You are right. When we tell them that our staffing is dangerous they look at us like we are crazy and write us up for "unprideful" behavior. They have no idea what goes on. They don't come to the floors or talk to us. They make 7 figure salaries and yet they wont even pay for us to have more than 2 nurse's aids per shift on minimum wage for 34 heavy, heavy, patients who need total care with dementia so bad they need one to one supervision to be safe.
