Are you concerned about the safety of Alaska Seafood? Do you currently eat it? Your opinion and thoughts are very important!

Re: Are you concerned about the safety of Alaska Seafood? Do you currently eat it? Your opinion and thoughts are very important!
The best Salmon Ive ever had was when my Stepdad was workng in Anchorage on a 2 yr job, and me & Mom flew up there for a week. It was breath-takingly beautiful. Went on a day cruise and stared at Blue ice glacier from 30 ft away and it was so blue it looked lke a popsicle and the ocean was clear onyx black that looked like a mirror.

Two days later we went to his favorite best restaurant to eat and I got the fresh catch of the day SALMON. I took a bite and it was buttery tender melt in your mouth fresh and so scrumptious I made lots of mmmmmm sounds so much so I think people started looking. jump
Thats all I wanted to eat when I was there!.

You can't get Salmon like that down here in Texas and what will we ever do if we can't get it up there in beautiful Alaska either?

So, long story to say: YES I AM VERY VERY CONCERNED and sad.verysad
I moved in with my elderly parents after my dad had a stroke 2 years ago. Now we are like the three muscateers. I kept buying gallons of water and can goods each time I went for groceries and if on-sale stacks of bottled water...finally Mama politely asked whats up with all the water. I finally came out and told her. I think it went well, the other day she was talking to a real estate lady. I asked why? She said , I was reading and we need a bug-out place...hehe true story!
Well enough about me.

I'm an Alaska commercial fisherman. My boat is in Toledo OR getting a new pilot house. We are almost finished and heading back to Kodiak tomorrow as we have a 7 day weather window which is absolutely unheard of at this time of year! But hey, I'll take it.

I have been in the ship yard here in OR for 3 months and have been testing radiation levels every day with 2 radiation detectors. I have not ventured far as I've not had time to go anywhere except from our apartment to the boat. I have not detected ANY levels above normal background radiation. This does not mean that there are not hot spots along the coast. I'm guessing if I had more time to walk the beaches I would probably find some hot spots.

We are heading north tomorrow (Tuesday) and I'm going to be testing the water every day, probably multiple times a day. I don't have Internet on the boat but if I find a high reading on the way to kodiak I will post it when I get there.

By the way, this is my first post on glp. Yes I know my username sucks, but i don't have the time to figure out how to change it.

People submitting fish for sampling will also fill out a questionnaire that we will use to create other data bases related to consumer use, concerns and comments

Americans consumed a total of 4.833 billion pounds of seafood – or approximately 15.8 pounds of fish and shellfish per person – of which roughly 50 percent is wild-caught and 50 percent is farmed, according to NOAA’s latest data. On a per capita basis, Americans eat about 3.5 ounces per week, which is half of what USDA recommends.

Mission Statement;
We are a group of concerned citizens, business owners, sport fishing and subsistence hunters, Alaskan residents with no hidden or political agenda. Our mission is simple we want to know the Alaskan Seafood we have caught is safe to eat and contaminate free.

What we will test for Radiation, Mercury, Nitrates

We feel there is a true need for this service if you feel the same way we would appreciate your input on the feasibility survey below. Thank You so much!

After the remarks from Juneau last week DEC: Fukushima radiation not ‘concern’ for Alaska
Commissioner Larry Hartig said the state has not seen concerning radiation levels from tsunami debris or in the water since the event and has no plans to launch its own radiation monitoring team. It just shows that you get more radiation risk from eating a banana than eating a tuna in that area.” Hartig said he understood concerns but said that monitoring in the Lower 48 and by the federal government have not shown there to be radiation meeting dangerous levels, adding that Alaska seafood is safe.

Kudos to you sir for taking the time…. what kind/type of detectors are you using? can they store information, as you are out on cell/internet connection to post the readings? this would be helpful, even daily during your trip back to Alaska…….. this will give a base line reading… very helpful

I presume this is your email address that we can use to get in contact… be safe on the water. and welcome to GLP!

Not touching Pacific seafood ever again... I am an engineer, so I have a thorough scientific education.

The evidence of the skin lesions and genetic problems in sealife, plus the basic knowledge of what is pouring into the ocean at Fukuichi is enough. The main ocean currents pull past fuku, then north and east to Alaska.

There is an ABSURD amount of radionuclides in that ocean current now.

Absurd.

I'm sure I'm on the red list already so I don't give a shit about posting my email address here as I'm sure they (NSA/CIA/FBI/DEA/DHS) already have me on on multiple lists for future extermination. I guess that's why I don't care anymore because if "WE" don't win "WE" are all screwed!

I have a Mazur PRM9000 radiation detector recommended by John B Wells from coast to coast. It's top of the line. It cost $700 with the case. I also have another cheap one which always reads a little bit above the Mazur.

Like I said, we are leaving OR tues and with a little luck will be in kodiak in a week. If I find any high readings I will absolutely post them on here at glp.

Re: Are you concerned about the safety of Alaska Seafood? Do you currently eat it? Your opinion and thoughts are very important!

Alaska Safe Seafood Scan Network
In a response to the lack of interest and effort on behalf of the Alaskan government to test radiation of the Alaskan fishing industry, A group of concerned citizens (particularly those in the fishing industry), are banding together to set-up a Private Collaboration to supply the Population with much needed information about the safety of seafood.

The concept for sites under constructed
alaskasafeseafoodscannetwork.com
where we will also purchase and test seafood at local stores and also canned, dried and frozen in-store brands All seafood will be tested for Mercury and radiation and nitrates

Into that will feed the following to begin with
tesmycatchalaska.com Alaska

with capabilities to incorporate other states to follow

All of the information gathered will dump into main website and onto App with real time ticker that runs results across the top of the page 24/7

Categories by fish and one for seaweed will be set up
Salmon
Halibut
Crab
Shrimp
Octopus
Sea Bass
Rock-fish
Oysters
Clams
more to be added

website visitors will see results interactive map will show and list where seafood has been caught with name and location co-ordinates for said waterway. All testing will be filmed and uploaded to website, App and facebook page

App will send out alert for any seafood breaching level
Any seafood breaching level will be sent immediately to certified 3rd party lab for further testing

We will start with field testers at the most popular fishing holes in Alaska and expand from there testers that will go through training will have a portable lab setup for equipment to work from at field locations.

Commercial Fleets, Seafood Processors, Charters, Guides and related fishing businesses as in bait shops, sporting good stores, lodges wanting to participate will be able to offer service by leasing equipment for the season with the option to buy at seasons end in return for their transparency they will be listed as testing sites.

Testing will be free but we will accept donations

We will charge a small fee for the App

People submitting fish for sampling will also fill out a questionnaire that we will use to create other data bases related to consumer use, concerns and comments

Americans consumed a total of 4.833 billion pounds of seafood – or approximately 15.8 pounds of fish and shellfish per person – of which roughly 50 percent is wild-caught and 50 percent is farmed, according to NOAA’s latest data. On a per capita basis, Americans eat about 3.5 ounces per week, which is half of what USDA recommends.

Mission Statement;

There is a bright side to fukushima! If seafood is declared toxic, then hopefully the fish populations can recover from all the over fishing.

You can pick up all the free dead sea food you want on california beaches...

Southern Oregon coast here. Walk the beaches regularly. Can't find any additional dead sea life, above and beyond what I've seen here since early 1995.

But then again, I don't get my news and information from enenews.com. If I did, I would have already shot myself, and gotten it over with.

I stopped eating ocean fish after the gulf oil disaster. No desire to ever eat it again with radiation in the mix. Can't believe people still do....

Had fish for supper tonight, from last years catch… it was fine… both Halibut and Silver Salmon…… Delicious!!!… This is part of the challenge…. people take a knee jerk reaction and stop eating ALL Fish….. not necessary. I understand that some have this reaction though…. This is why i will be testing my fish first, before putting it in my pantry, and on my table. along with all our food! Need to be safe.

Do you really think that the radiation falling from the sky will not poison the crops on the fields? the grass that the cows eat? the grapes they make wine with? The soil that they plant tomatoes in? Use common sense! It is not just the ocean! it is the soil we plant our crops in, it is the air we breathe, it is the rainwater that runs off our roof……CMON!!!!!!

Those who take the knee jerk reaction to stop eating all pacific fish, should do the same with Chicken/Turkey, that they inject with broth to juice it up, after feeding it with GMO Corn. also with Beef, that they fatten up with Steroids etc…….. Anything less would be hypocritical.

It's like the people who keep insisting that the west coast is doomed. If it is, then people all over the country are.

Radiation that manages to make it 6 or 7 thousand miles (since it doesn't travel in a a straight line) isn't going to be much more dissipated after an additional thousand or two. In fact, the higher elevations get it worse that the coast.

only seafood we eat are wild caught US east coast shrimp and Island Creed oysters in the shell.

no alaskan seafood, no pacific seafood, no gulf seafood, no east coast farm raised seafood and no imported seafood at all especially that shit they call fish that's processed in china.

no canned seafood period.

have couple cases of canned salmon that was put back several years ago to make salmon cakes out of but will not restock once current in house supply is consumed. actually glad we stocked up cause we would not touched canned salmon now with a ten foot pole.

still putting back a case of various mountain house freeze dried #10 cans once every two or three months though. their rice with chicken is not bad and their scrambled eggs with bacon is edible as well among others.

I had such good cholesterol that the doc askedme how I did it and it was from allllll the seafood I ate. Now, with that said, I am no longer eating seafood due to all the garbage that's in the water these days. I just started this about 3weeks ago and I can say that it's been difficult because my diets has revolved around seafood my whole life. It's a sad state of affairs. God's proud of us :(
