Well to clarify - a slight majority of the debt is actually held by the US government in accounts and trust funds. For instance, Social Security is the biggest trust fund in the United States and it has lent money to the government.

That means if the US government refuses to pay its debt then social security wouldn't have money to send out cheques s to pensioners.

Rest of the US debt is held by various public and private pension funds, mutual funds, insurance companies, et cetera.

The actual amount of foreign debt is minimum in the grand scheme. Most of the debt is held within the United States and, arguably, it is predominately held by older people (see social security and older people are more likely to own stocks and mutual funds than younger people).

The US is an extremely wealthy country but poorly managed.
If you calculate its assets, land, mining, tourism, potential land development, industrial production capabilities, quality and educational level of its inhabitants and a long etc... They largely surpass its debt. Just needs to get its act together, improve education , refocus its values and national morality , get rid of the "confort culture" and get rid of the culprits that promete its moral decline... I dont get it. Handouts as you call them are offered to temper inflation and it keeps people from producing and creating inflation through non directable means (Fractional lending/banking)Direct "keying-in" and creation of money without production is directable and they are directing it to the financial sector to try and save the dollar. Both of these money creation schemes done in tandom would render the dollar worthless within weeks because of the hyperinflation that would result.

They have stopped the regular economy to save the dollar.

While that is true you have to remember that most of the owners of that debt have globalized their financial assets. And they of course can do that because they have plenty of extra money to invest around the world. That way even if the American economy turns to shit like it is then they still have assets in Europe, Central and Eastern Asia, The Middle East and Africa.

Of course for most people they just don't have the means to do that because at the very least it would require hundreds of thousands of extra capital just sitting in the bank waiting to be invested. Even then $500,000 is just a drop in the bucket compared to how much you could invest globally. Simply put these Americans may not have that much of a connection to the country at all.
