The black residue is amorphous carbon caused by the butane in the lighter. Soot will also be observed if you hold a match under the snowball. Hold a lighter under a spoon & you will see the same carbon residue. The snowball doesn't appear to be melting because there are many air pockets in the snow & they absorb the water before the snowball actually drips. If you place the snowball that didn't drip in a saucepan over low heat & watch it melt, you will first notice the water level riding inside the ball before the size of the ball changes noticeably or any water collects in the pan. In essence, the ball changes to a slushball before any water drips. |
