i saw a similar video where a guy simply used some seran wrap with a few ounces of water inside, tied it like a balloon and lit his kindling with the magnified sun-beam...

that is a nice set but a bit complicated for my taste.

I know that it can be done with a transparent water bottle. Haven't seen this particular vid & marked it for later.

I think the shape of the object helps with the effect of magnitude of the light but I'm sure it can be done with other shaped objects but I would have thought that a sphere shape is genuinely a good way to go

Re: Use Water to make Fire (Survival)
Can anyone remember the fake video about using an orange to make fire ?

here's the solution admittedly useless as a short term solution but good for a long term use...

With the first day of Fall just around the corner, there are some parts of the country that have seen rather low nighttime temperatures. We're always ready to bid Summer farewell and welcome Fall (and all that goes with it) with open arms. Time to light the first fire in the fireplace? If so, turn to citrus peels instead of kindling!Although you'll probably need a little supplemental help from another source, orange peels are perfect fire starters! The oil in the skin fuels the fires and in the process they release less creosote than traditional paper. It will keep your chimneys cleaner in the process and leave your home smelling like roasted oranges — take that Febreze!

Lol, op, thanks for sharing.
But this will never work in uk.
No sun in the last six month in bristol. I think its a bit too long to sit and wait for the sun to light a fire

Gee a magnifying glass or a pair of eyeglasses are so much more effective at this and easier to transport.

PS: If the suns behind the clouds then good luck using any of these methods.

I agree its a matter of inconvenience but none the less its handy for people to know other methods I mean what you going to when your flint goes or your wick frays ?
