Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 53739996 United Kingdom 02/03/2014 07:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Russia expects Ukrainian opposition to restrain from threats and ultimatums – Foreign Ministry Moscow is worried by the Ukrainian opposition's desire to escalate the domestic situation even further and says its calls for the setting up of voluntary vigilante units to patrol the streets and organize protests outside regional administrations, actions that run counter to the opposition claims of being committed to democracy, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. "Russia is very concerned by the desire of Ukrainian opposition forces to escalate the domestic situation even more," the ministry said in a statement posted on its website on Monday. "One of the opposition leaders publicly urged Ukrainians to even set up some voluntary vigilante teams, to patrol streets and stage protests outside regional administrations. All this directly runs counter to the opposition's claims of being committed to democracy and European values," the ministry said. "It is bewildering that these sorts of provocative steps are made immediately after the meeting between opposition leaders and Western representatives that took place in Munich," the statement said. "We hope the Ukrainian opposition will abandon its threats and ultimatums and step up its dialogue with the authorities so as to lead the country out of its deep constitutional crisis," the Russian Foreign Ministry said. Anonymous Coward User ID: 53828638 United Kingdom 02/03/2014 08:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A Ukrainian federation - or a Russian plot? The ruling Party of Regions has mooted a federation as a possible way out of crisis for Ukraine. But far from defusing tensions, the opposition believes giving more power to the regions would cause the state to collapse. Article 2 of the Ukrainian Constitution defines Ukraine as a unitary state. The country, which regained its independence following the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991, is divided into 24 districts (oblasts) and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Its capital and center of power is Kyiv. The president, the government and parliament have authority over nearly everything, from taxes to language policy. But that could soon change. There are increasing signs that the ruling Party of Regions could try to exploit the current political crisis to make Ukraine into a federation. The party has its strongholds in the east and south of the country. Vadim Koleznichenko, spoke in favor of a "federalization of Ukraine." He said that citizens in the east and south of Ukraine see the opposition protests in Kyiv as a "threat" to themselves Federalization should help to prevent the state from falling apart. According to media reports, Ukraine could then be divided into up to seven large states, each with its own parliament. Opposition warns of Kremlin stratagem These ideas are not new; there has already been heated debate about whether Ukraine should be a federation. In the early 1990s, the Crimean peninsula wanted to secede. During the Orange Revolution in 2004, regions in the east and south of the country threatened to form their own republic. But this time could be serious. Protests in Kyiv, which at least superficially seem to be the work of West Ukrainians, were widely rejected in the east. There, many people still feel connected with Russia. They often watch Russian television that portrays the events in Kyiv as a "far-right coup d'etat." [link to www.dw.de] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 53828638 United Kingdom 02/03/2014 08:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When is the far-right acceptable to the West? When it's in Ukraine The ‘progressive’ Western political elites and the establishment journalists who act as PR agents for them would like us to think that they are unequivocally opposed to neo-Nazism, homophobia, racism and far-right political extremism. But how genuine is their opposition? The current disturbances in Ukraine and the western response to them, suggests that it’s highly selective to say the least. Let’s imagine for a moment that there were violent demonstrations led by ultranationalists and neo-Nazis in a Western European country, and that those demonstrators held up posters of figures who had collaborated with the Nazis during World War II. That they had shouted neo-Nazi slogans and their leaders had made anti-Jewish and homophobic statements. That these same protesters had used violence to try and topple the democratically elected government – and that they had seized government buildings. We can expect the western elites and establishment journalists to fiercely denounce the protesters, who would definitely be labeled “rioters,” that they would call for “law and order” to swiftly be restored and for the leaders of the demonstrators to be arrested, and for them to be prosecuted under hate speech legislation. Yet this is exactly what has been happening in Ukraine, and far from condemning the far-right protesters, the Western elites have been enthusiastically supporting their cause. [link to rt.com] |

He called for an end to violence in Ukraine; the release of all those arrested during protests; an investigation – with western help – into all recent “kidnappings, beatings, torture and murders” of activists; and constitutional reform to transfer many of president Viktor Yanukovich’s “dictatorial” powers to government and parliament. The request came Monday from the Ukrainian Jewish Committee, following the cancellation of a special discussion on anti-Semitism in Ukraine which was scheduled to take place under auspices of the Israeli Knesset’s Committee for Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Affairs. “We regret this decision [to cancel] based on political [considerations,] and believe that time is critical especially now,” Eduard Dolinsky, director of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee, told JTA. He added: “We turned to Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman and Deputy Minister Ze’ev Elkin with the request to help to arrange a delegation of Israeli security professionals to evaluate the security needs of Jewish institutions and organizations in Ukraine. This request is based on a survey we conducted among community leaders.” [link to www.jta.org] |

As many as 30,000 protesters gathered in the capital, Kiev, on Sunday, renewing calls for Yanukovych to step down. The president had announced his sick leave on Thursday, prompting concern that, as The Associated Press writes, "he may have been taking himself out of action in preparation for declaring a state of emergency." Yanukovych and his government have been the target of three months of protests sparked by his decision to abandon closer ties with Europe in favor of Russia, which dominated Ukraine through the Soviet era. U.S. diplomats say the plan hinges on a peaceful resolution to Ukraine's political crisis and a power-sharing deal between Mr. Yanukovych and his critics. Talks over power-sharing so far have ended in acrimony and deadlock, with the president calling in sick last week and saying he had done all he could to appease his critics. While Mr. Yanukovych dismissed his government and offered posts to the opposition, they say the moves are meaningless because the presidency in Ukraine holds most of the power. Moreover, it isn't clear Ukraine's opposition leaders can persuade protesters to stomach a compromise with Mr. Yanukovych, who is widely maligned for attempting a crackdown on critics. Demonstrators responded by throwing up barricades in the streets of Kiev and occupying government buildings. They have so far refused appeals from the government to leave the capital and are pressing for snap elections in Ukraine. [link to online.wsj.com] what are the actual conditions to the western aid package ? Mr. Kerry made clear that the aid would be "conditional on having real reform and a real transition in Ukraine," a senior U.S. official said. this language doesn't seem accepting to the current Ukrainian Government who a getting even closer to Russia |

[link to news.xinhuanet.com] This is an inclination of what to expect and if the Ukrainian government are expecting this so is Russia, and that would mean that they know enough I dare say there are plans in place to combat this kind of escalation I would say covertly at first to meet the Danger head on and then If US/EU get involved in the way that they have with Syria then we may see a more overt response taking place from Russia Its self and not just confined to Ukraine... I can see Russia supplying more advance arms to Syria and/or ramping up their presence in the Med and other area's before clashing inadvertently with Western Overt forces |
