Homemade Chapstick: How to make your very own lip-balm using 2 ingredients.
Made a killer lip-balm; 2/3rds coconut oil, 1/3rd beeswax. I melted the coconut oil and beeswax in a small pot and poured the liquid into small containers. The liquid sets up fast... pretty simple.

I've been making my own for years. I often add essences for flavour...peppermint, vanilla, lemon. Some vitamin E is nice to add as well..... :)

I've got bricks of beeswax I use for art. Is that the right kind? Do you use a melting pot, or on the stove?

Thanks for the great idea! My lips are always chapped. Aquafina is the best I have found, but would love to make my own!

I have a dedicated crock pot that I use. It melts the wax gently so it doesn't burn.

This was my first time. I will definitely add the Vitamin E in future batches.. Coconut oil does not contain enough: [link to healthimpactnews.com]

I like the idea of using peppermint and menthol, but I want to research the effects of the others when used topically.

I bought a chunk of beeswax from the store today, as far as I know beeswax is beeswax.

I just melted it on the stove in a small copper pot. I suppose you could use a double-boiler, but coconut-oil is highly stable... I don't think the extra precaution is necessary.

The beeswax melts into the coconut oil. You can play with the ratios of course... but I'm happy with the consistency @ 2:1 coconut oil.

I used various containers I had recycled, maybe try a dollar store.

I think you could re-use a Chapstick tube...remember to turn the Chapstick dial all the way to the left first and then fill it up.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 53230990

Petrolatum works, but it does nothing to moisturize or directly help speed healing. Petrolatum seals the lips off from the air, which allows the body to heal them naturally, however; Petrolatum contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), cancer-causing chemicals found in crude oil and its by-products.

To say the coconut oil/beeswax is "not good for anything" is just ignorant. It works!
