The reason it is a big deal is because these regions are not used to snow. They don't have snow tires first of all, and they aren't used to driving in it. Secondly, I'm sure there isn't an abundance of snow plows and salt/sand trucks like there is up north because they only see snow like this maybe like once in a decade.

I bet the Canadian OP would be freaking out if he experienced the HEAT we southerners feel from May - Late September each year in his Canadian turf.

Imagine temps 100 or near it every day, high humidity, tornadoes, hurricanes, storms that destroy entire towns in a few minutes.

The south and midwest have the right to get a bit concerned when snow and ice conquer such a territory.

You have inspected only one side of this argument OP. You have forgot that we are human also and we have the right to be concerned. That we may not be familiar with your climate as you are not familiar with ours.

Sometimes the lack of compassion, understanding, and just friendliness on this site stuns me.

When the roads are solid ice and your driving up or down large hills, which is what we have in the south, it is impossible whether your driving slow or not. Take that with most haven't ever driven on ice who live down here. Plus a few salt trucks. 2 inches shuts down the city. I only remember 3 events in 20 years living here.

But as for this catastrophic event....uhm, I hardly think so. Yes, there is ice all over the roads, but really, it is ridiculous. There is nothing epic about this storm. We'll see what the AM brings, but for the moment.... Nothing but a shut down city sitting in some ice.

I'm in a manual 6speed 426hp rearwheel camaro with wide ass water tread sport pirelli's yet I manage to stay on the road, due to driving at a sensible speed during less than favorable weather conditions.

I see 4wd trucks and SUVs with big ol knubby tires in ditches all the time down here with just a light dusting of snow.

Then again I learned how to drive as a youth in North Dakota and already had 10,000 miles under my belt before I even turned 16 (Thank you for teaching me how to drive Dad!)

Can't wait for them roads to heat back up & I can set these roads on fire again tho :D

I, for one, think that they SHOULD scare the crap out of them after what happened in Georgia, what?, two weeks ago now. How many people died in that storm & how many of them were stuck in traffic. Those of us that have lived in harsher environments know how to deal & that all to often our BIGGEST problem is not the weather or road conditions but the inexperienced & flat out morans in the other vehicles.
Best to err on the side of caution, ESPECIALLY in an area unaccustomed to harsh weather. Just one Man's opinion, take it or leave it, no malice to anyone on the thread intended.

I'd one star you just for your crappy attitude. It's not the snow that's the issue, and it's certainly nothing to fear...however a half inch to an inch of ice does a lot of damage and can take out a power grid, you add that to the fact that most southern states don't budget for snow/ice removal then it makes for a travel nightmare until the weather warms up. With all that said, I live in northern Alabama and would have loved to have seen two feet or more of snow, however it changed over to rain/freezing rain for a 12 hour period melting most of the 6" we got Monday night/Tuesday morning before changing back over to snow.

It's not us man. We are fine. It's ppl from overseas who like to read what they type in big bold red letters, and post twitter garbage to make themselves seem more important, when in reality they are thousands of miles away, are highly compromised by the SET factor, and really have not one fucking idea of what is really happening on the ground, in real time.

I will admit a straight up no snow or sleet but ice sheet is pretty tough to manuver on. It's a no goin up hills, tires spinning, brakes locking, clutch feathering cluster fuck then.

It would be so nice if weather on GLP was reported only by TRAINED storm spotters. But you have people here who post bullshit to just ramp up the fear. But then again, this is GLP.

We are not used to the cold down here in Louisiana. Different climates.

I just got off the phone with my 19 year old telling him this is nothing but a return to more normal weather patterns in the southeast. It seems strange to him because the last 15-20 winters have been pretty mild.

Are you serious? I'm traveling to Miami right now, from Ohio. I took 65 to avoid Georgia especially atlanta. I stopped in Athens and was hoping to complete the journey tomorrow. I had to stop the snow was treachorous. The weather will be above freezing and sunny.. I hope there is something of an effort to clear the highway. What do you expect my travel to be like? Any recommendations as far as route or timeframe?

We used to have ice a lot in the 1950s and in 1963 we had 13" of snow in a little while, 1966 we had 8" of snow, in the 1970s Ice storms, 1980s deep freeze for weeks with ice freezing on trees and knocking out power, 1990s A blizzard, more cold winters with very cold weather. In 1977 we had a week plus of black ice on the road, in January. 198O we had snow on the ground about 4" my children were scared of it, first snow. In the 1960s we had temperature 5 degrees below zero. We could walk on the lakes. So all this is not new to use.

This one is a funny one people are already playing in the snow and having a great time, it is wet and you can make snowmen, snow balls etc.. fun!

That's the thing that worries me about Georgia. Most of the state is one big forest. Those trees can't take an inch or two of ice without going over.

It's rare down there for sure. But I have been arctic ice age cold in Alabama, just not since the 60s and 70s. Long, fur lined winter coats and hats used to be the fashion here. I was made to wear a Russian bear hat when I was a kid-hated it but it was warm.

The last time I remember cold like this was1985, it was zero degrees in Montgomery.

I've been living in the south for over 10 years now, moved from North. South is hands down 10 times better, the people down here are wonderful. Much more freedom too.

But every year around winter time it's the same goddamn thing year after year, whenever there any snow at all, and by "snow" it could be frost on the ground - the stupid ass fucking news and media and radio will all start screaming and fear mongering, the schools all close people don't show up for work.

It's absolutely insane.

I am sitting here now with snow outside and no one plans to go to work tomorrow except me. I am lazy and would like to take the day off and take advantage of the situation, but I am rebelling against all this stupid bs scaremonger.

Tomorrow morning I am going to get up, get in my fucking truck and go to work just like any other work day and everything is going to be just fine.

If I was a lot younger, I would be mad abt the road closures and shutdowns etc. but you have to examine the road closures for what they really are. Keeping a certain group of people from trying to drive certain vehicles during the ice, and I am sure you can see what I mean. Vehicles with tires sidewalls thinner than the depth of the snow in particular. And if the roads were open, those drivers would be trying to drive right now.

It's shameful. So many hateful people.
