The earth may actually be very old - explained by a Christian
Not all Christians believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old. Just FYI...

Where do some people even get the idea that Earth is 6000 years old anyway?

Because the Bible lists how long many of the people lived, starting with Adam all the way to Jesus. You can add it up and it comes to around 6,000 years. And before that there were six twenty-four hour days of creation followed by a seventh day of rest.

But many Christians believe this history is only the history of man. There may have been another history on earth prior to man.

Actually only 1% of the Christians worldwide believe that shit, and they are all Americans. And crazy (they think people rode dinosaurs before the flood).

Just FYI.

Even the Big bang hypothesis is from a catholic priest.

I'm tired that 2 millions stupid American Christian fundies always get the stoplight when 2 billions Christians worldwide all look at them and think they are crazy.

Fuck American fundies, they are insane and want to see the world burn.

When I wrote 'many' it was just a term. The actual number of Gap believers represents a small fraction of Christians... with the majority of Christians (the young earth believers) might be driving the unsaved farther away from Christianity by arguing about times and dates. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Also you have to know where this theory comes from.

It's a modern American invention to read the Bible literally.

For centuries people knew the Bible is a book with a lot of allegories, especially genesis and revelation.

But Americans who always want to do differently decided that despite 2000 years of contradicting traditions, genesis must be read literally.

They are simply deluded, there's no other words to say it. And it's coming from a Christian.

If you think Genesis is to be read literally you contradict 2000 years of biblical tradition.

Just so you know.

If you don't believe earth is 6000 years old but still believe in the bible, then you would have to believe evolution... and that would imply god intentionally caused mutations, intentionally caused bad mutations so natural selection had something to do......... all this to create humans so the bible could exist... yeah... nah

That's a typical error anglo-saxons make because they polarize the debate between literal interpretation of the bible and science.

But the premise of the literal interpretation of the bible is incorrect.

You can be a scientist and a Christian. I am one. My great uncle was a particle physicist and a priest.

The Bible is about morals and ethics and salvation. Not archaeology or biology. Those who want to make you think otherwise are lying.

I believe in evolution but it has yet to be determined if evolution is guided by a final objective or purely random.

Even science can't decide it yet.

Nothing in modern science denies my belief in a greater purpose.

Genesis itself shows this to be the fact. The earth was "without form and void". The Genesis account was a RE-CREATION of the earth.

Must scientists are influenced by the modern American debate between fundamentalist theories like creationism and their education, and they can see creationism is false (it is).

So they extend that to the whole Christian doctrine which is ridiculous.

Science doesn't deal with morals and ethics.
Spirituality doesn't deal with physics.

These two topics do not overlap so any scientist who says he can't believe in a higher purpose because of science is committing a logical fallacy and can't be deemed a serious scientist.

The history of science in Europe is full of interaction between the two fields, and people like Einstein, Spinoza or Newton regularly discussed about the existence of a transcendental reality.

It sucks so much that the Anglo-saxon world brushed all that away just because a few protestant sects decided to become fundies and to read the bible literally.

Do you discuss with terrorists when you want to understand islam? No. So why you people think 1% Christians that happen to live in the US represent 99% of that belief? They don't.

They are even a bit crazy and deluded.

Genesis is a myth. All religions wordwide have creation myth.

What makes you think the jewish creation myth is an historical account and the sumerian or japanese or hindu ones are just myths?

Because you are biased and uncritical.

Read genesis for what it is and learn, a symbolic creation myth.

Oh I know new-age does. But not with a scientific approach.

sorry I'm a spiritual person and a scientist and I use the best tool for each purpose.

Science is best suited to explore physics (did religious text foresee bosons and quarks?) and religion/philosophy to explore ethics and morals.

I know your opinion, I studied it, but it doesn't survive a critical examination. Sorry.

You might want to ease up on the bashing a little bit. Not all anglo-saxon Christians think the same way. I am proof. But, I don't believe in evolution either. It doesn't have to be one or the other. There are various schools of thought.

of course you can be a scientist and christian, not all fields of science have anything to do with evolution..

you could even be a christian and a scientist that deals with evolution, but it would not make sense to be a young earth creationist and a biologist...

well we can see today mutations are mostly random. mutations play a big part of evolution..

Genesis has everything to do with Judaism. It's one of their holy texts.

Sorry you seem to be so deluded and crazy and believing fairy tales like 99% of the people here (how surprising).

And you are incorrect about the 6000 years.

It was calculated by an American protestant based on the genealogy described in genesis.

Where have you read in the bible that "the earth is 6 days old and 1 day = 1000 years"?

You mix everything like most deluded people here, sorry to be blunt but it's the sad truth.
