Geology on an epic scale: the Yellowstone caldera

This line of ancient supervolcanoes records the passage of the Yellowstone hotspot – or, more accurately, the movement of North America over the Yellowstone hotspot – in the last 15 million years or so.

Prior to this, the trough that holds the Snake River Plain was not there – the Rocky Mountains formed a continuous chain running from northwest to southeast.
That trough has been excavated; the mountains literally blown into dust by massive supervolcano eruptions gradually eating eastward into the Rockies, with the debris spread far and wide across the continental US.

This makes the Yellowstone hotspot the evil twin of the one beneath the Hawaiian Islands: above Hawaii, basaltic volcanism builds up mountains from the sea floor; above Yellowstone, explosive rhyolitic eruptions through continental crust destroys them.

About 4 miles beneath Yellowstone National Park's beautiful scenery is a forty-mile-wide chamber full of molten rock under incredibly high pressure. This magma is what powers Yellowstone's fantastic geysers and hot springs, but is it about to erupt in a cataclysmic explosion that will decimate the western United States and push mankind to the brink of extinction?

Yellowstone Volcano Observatory in a statement in 2011 added, "Geological activity over the past five years includes widespread ground uplift and two notable earthquake swarms. Though scientifically interesting, such events are common in large caldera systems like Yellowstone, and are not indicative of an imminent eruption."

The idea that Yellowstone may be "overdue" is also faulty. With only three catastrophic eruptions and two intervals between to go on there is not enough data to say that another one should be occurring in the near future.

Even if there was, there is little mankind could do about it. Drilling into the magma chamber to release pressure, as some have suggested, would be impractical and ineffective. The material in the chamber has the consistency of a sponge and any "hole" opened up to the surface would quickly seal as the molten rock crept up and cooled.

The Sleeping Dragon

That doesn't mean that there isn't (as one scientist put it) a proverbial giant dragon sleeping under Yellowstone. It may well one day awake and lay waste to much of the western United States. The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, however, watches the park carefully and analyzes the continuous geological changes occurring in the region. It is likely that the imminent threat of another catastrophic explosion would not go unnoticed by their modern instruments. So far, however, activity is business-as-usual at the park.

Still, the super volcano at Yellowstone, and its kin around the world are a credible threat to man. Even the United States Geological Survey, usually conservative about such matters, admits that should a major eruption occur the results would have "global consequences that are beyond human experience and impossible to anticipate fully."

Don't they actually read magma flow in the different veins if so then it makes sense .......

This was me...sorry forgot to sign in :D

I assumed that is what the different CH's are, but wasn't sure.. tried to do a little research on exactly how to decipher these readings, but as usual, work calls :) Been following this thread closely for awhile though as I have suspected weird activity at Yellowstone for quite sometime.

the steam is getting darker now!

I'm pretty sure the CH stands for Channel and represents a different location of the lake being measured. CH0 seems to be the one being most affected.

Tilt meter seems to be showing quite a bit of activity as well. Going to have to dig in and figure out some of these measurements. Sure doesn't look very good though.

if the episode of magma movements and harmonic tremours were strong enough, id say these sensors could pick it up audio from ground deformation....
i think norris junction and lake butte have had such episodes....hmmmmn

yeah!!

a tiltmeter is the same concept as a carpenters bubble.
it messures tilt, and rise and fall.
this is a very good way to get an idear of the dynamics of inside a volcano, and how certain fetures act.

in this case, the metters are a good way to get info on quickly esculateing ground deformation assosiated with magmatic movements.

in the case of Kilauea volcano in the hawian islands, tiltmeters indicate the slow ejection of the magma chamber, then its recharge.
as it declines the magma chamber emptys.
as it asends back up, the magma chamber refills.....

average 0 (ground level)
current decline -181,300 micro radians
current ascension +1,300 micro radians

this gives sure fire evidence a HEAVY GROUND DEFORMATION EVENT STARTED 01/05/2014 on the lake bed.....

the stable elevation was 0 mico radians.
it droped rapidly, and now its climbing!
its currently +1,300 showing extream bulgeing activity.
a magma plume is accelerating towards the surface....and its causeing issues.
id say this is what has put the lake on tilt (south west) and events at noriss junction, lake butte and lake yellowstone itself, is this deormation being recorded.

there is about 4km between the lake bed and magma chamber.
how much is 181,300 micro radians?....

the past 24 hours have been intersting....
pressure events at lake yellowstone, with the lake bed becomeing very unstable.....geyser temps on the rise.....ground deformation....
