Bush’ arrives in southern Turkey as Russia reportedly deploys anti-ship missiles The U.S. Navy’s newest and most powerful aircraft carrier has docked in Antalya, Turkey—meaning she is within striking distance of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula. And it appears Russia is deploying anti-ship missiles in response. USS George H.W. Bush is hauling more than 60 warplanes including no fewer than 40 Hornet and Super Hornet strike-fighters. Bush’s escorting destroyers and cruisers, together packing hundreds of long-range missiles, are presumably nearby. Nuclear attack submarines usually also accompany American flattops on deployment. Commissioned five years ago, the 1,100-foot-long Bush is America’s newest aircraft carrier. Her Mediterranean deployment is “designed to strengthen maritime security,” according to the U.S. 6th Fleet. Russian forces staged a bloodless invasion of Crimea in late February in order to secure strategic naval and air bases and port facilities that historically were part of Russia. Moscow holds a long-term lease on at least seven Crimean military facilities but apparently feared losing them as Ukraine forms a new, more pro-Western government. The Russian Black Sea fleet includes just five aging surface warships. Despite their age and likely sad state of disrepair, the Kremlin’s vessels combined are far more powerful than Ukraine’s sole frigate, which sped back to Ukrainian waters from Indian Ocean counter-piracy duty in the days following the Russian invasion. America’s 6th Fleet has been quietly assembling in and around the Black Sea, and could in theory back up the Ukrainians in the unlikely event that the Crimean occupation escalates into a shooting war. Washington has imposed economic and travel sanctions in a bid to compel Moscow to depart Crimea. The destroyer USS Truxtun split from the Bush carrier group on or around March 5 and sailed through the Turkish Straits for exercises with the Romanian and Bulgarian navies in the Black Sea. Treaties allow foreign warships to remain in the Black Sea just 21 days. The U.S. had two ships—a frigate and a command ship—in the Black Sea to assist with security during the Winter Olympics in southern Russia in February. The frigate Taylor ran aground and lightly damaged her hull. Both vessels have left the Black Sea—Taylor while under tow. In apparent response to the American naval build-up, the Kremlin has reportedly staged a battery of deadly anti-ship missiles to Crimea, according to Tamir Eshel’s Defense Update Website. Citizens witnessed the Bastion anti-ship missile systems traveling from the Russian town of Anapa to Sevastopol on March 8 and 9, Defense Update reported. Bastion includes the P-800 missile with a 550-pound warhead. The missile can travel more than 150 miles at Mach 2.5 and could be very difficult to intercept. Russia developed the P-800 specifically to target American aircraft carriers and other well-defended ships. ============================================== This one aircraft carrier could stop the Russians in Crimea and/or Ukraine if it came to that. Not when its on the bottom of the Black sea, being sunk by the Sunburn missile. wont happen This one aircraft carrier could stop the Russians in Crimea and/or Ukraine if it came to that. |

He is clearly aware of the mismatch between the two countries armed forces. A force of less than half this size would be more than considerable and enough to control eastern Ukraine. Hmm, they also out number NATO's armored capabilities. This could end up being a prelude to something larger. Exactly. Best case scenario - they're just securing the Crimea. Worst case scenario - the whole of the Ukraine. It's obviously impossible to read at this moment, but with the weak leadership in Washington and bureaucratic back-and-forth in the EU, they could be thinking the Ukraine is there for the taking. Agreed. What concerns me the most is the sound of silence. That is to say we are not hearing any talking going on between D.C. and the Kremlin. That is never good. Throw in "War Games" in Poland and...........Not good, not good at all. Yep, compare this situation to the Syrian almost war. Those two were on TV almost everyday.. or on the phone or whatever. This time around you barely even hear Kerry pop his horse head up. The silence is concerning as we all wait for whatever is coming. Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me. Or something |

At a press conference in the Manhattan office of the United Jewish Communities of Eastern Europe, Bleich compared Russia’s behavior to that of the Nazis prior to the Anschluss invasion of Austria in 1938. “Things may be done by Russians dressing up as Ukrainian nationalists,” he said, adding that it’s “the same way the Nazis did when they wanted to go into Austria and created provocations.” Bleich, a vice president of the World Jewish Congress, also announced the creation of an aid effort, KievRelief.org, to fund security for synagogues and mosques and to provide humanitarian relief for all Ukrainians. Bleich, who moved to Ukraine in 1989 from Brooklyn, was slated, along with other Ukrainian political and religious leaders, to meet with Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday. He said he will urge Kerry to be assertive with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to move the G8 Summit to Kiev, as a show of solidarity with Ukrainians, and to consider sending military support to Ukraine. While acknowledging that Americans are “war-weary,” he said Ukrainians need “boots on the ground to protect democracy” and to prevent “the cold war from getting hot.” Asked about anti-Semitism among Ukrainian nationalists, particularly two far-right parties that have been included in the new government, Bleich acknowledged concerns but said the Jewish community has received assurances from top government leaders that their safety will be protected. “The Russians are blowing this way, way out of proportion,” he said, referring to the issue of anti-Semitism among some Ukrainian nationalist factions. He said that Ukrainians were united in response to the Russian intervention. “There were many differences of opinion throughout the revolution, but today all that is gone,” he said. “We’re faced by an outside threat called Russia. It’s brought everyone together.” ================================================ |

It is a bad luck when Russia can't answer conventionally to NATO superiority in air/sea. |

They have almost no way to reinforce their Crimea forces unless they gain air-superiority over NATO, an extremely unlikely event. Quoting: Fingulas Without air-superiority, they can't reliably maneuver and re-supply. That's why they're digging in. They know they won't be maneuvering anytime soon. So without re-supply and without the ability to maneuver against an attacking force they are left with poorly positioned static defenses. Putin better pray to whatever God he worships that NATO doesn't act. Fun fact: Soviet / Russian hardware has never fared well against Western tech since the early 1960's. The gap in performance has only gotten wider as time goes on. Predictions: There will be a limited conflict over the Ukraine. Probably centering around Kiev. The SA-400 systems are easily taken out and other air defense systems suppressed within days of a conflict. Russia's air force, while excellent, lack critical combined arms experience and is small. They lose a majority of theater air-support in a week, maybe two. Chinese stay the hell out once they see Russia's premier defense systems trashed, knowing they'll fare no better. Tactical nukes are rolled out and the perhaps 1-2 are used. Putin is overthrown, Russia withdraws but so does NATO. Ukraine is left a blasted wreck for generations. Interesting scenario. If by interesting you mean retarded, then yes it is very interesting. No I meant interesting. Please don't correct my opinion. |
