Not quite. The war starts with the first snow of winter 2014/2015.

U.S. is waiting (and stalling) for the winter just as much as Russians are. In this case, U.S. will have the advantage as Russians will only shoot themselves in the foot trying to use gas to blackmail Europe.

Once the oil and gas crisis begins on the world scale, blowing up that pipeline going through Ukraine will virtually guarantee that NATO countries will attack Russia in order to take what they will so desperately need (energy resources) in order to survive the winter of 2015/2016.

The (global) winter is coming and Russians have gambled every single chance they were given to get out of this mess unhurt.

All wars are energy wars, whether with stones and sticks or with nuclear weapons, it always comes down to fighting over the means of survival.
