Why would NATO get involved? Ukraine is not in NATO.

Was listening to an American historian last night...expert on Russia. He claimed there is a steady build up of NATO troops in Baltic NATO member states. Besides that NATO has been very vocal and outspoken re Russia's intentions. So Ukraine not being NATO member, you could ask...wtf has it got to do with NATO and why they sticking there nose in.
