Possible, but investigation could tell. Also, damage looking like machine gun fire where reported on 3 parts of fuselage. They broke apart, so if shot in the air the damage should spread in "a line of fire" on the broken parts when put back together. There is a good website which collected all pictures, I think there it should be visible what the pattern of the damage is.
