How does it just disappear? This thing could be on a collision course with Earth and we wouldn't even know it! Its not in this case but how does one 'miscalculate' the trajectory for a comet this big and this close? This should not happen in today's time.

It wasn't miscalculated. Newtonian Mechanics worked just fine. What was an unknown whether the comet would survive perihelion so close to the Sun. The answer, as it happened, turned out to be no.
