Social Security Disability Fund Running Out Of Money, Is It Due To Fraud?

Pretty much. My girlfriend was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and pretty severe at that. It took 5 doctors writing on her behalf AND an attorney to qualify at all (and 2 years of me doing paperwork), because of all the fraud being perpetrated on the system. This is a woman who worked 3 jobs and always paid her dues for decades before she got sick...meanwhile, we had a neighbor who was on it because she just couldn't stop herself from eating McDonald's 3 times a day and got too fat. Figure that one out.

First of all there is SSI and there is SSDI and the two are not the same. SSI is welfare; meant to be short duration relief. You need not have a work history to get on SSI. SSDI is disability Insurance and you have to work and earn a minimum number of quarters to qualify. Thirdly, the vast majority; upwards of 90% of those who apply are denied the first time. Of those who appeal approximately only 7 to 9% are approved on what's called "reconsideration". After that the applicant has to file a second appeal and go in front of and administrative law judge. The entire process can take up to 2 years or more in some cases.
It is NOT easy folks, regardless of the bullshit armchair opinions being recklessly thrown around. I have known some good folks, with legitimate disabling conditions get rejected multiple times. I'm sure as with everything in life that some will try and game the system. However when the average monthly SSDI benefit is $1000. Bucks, nobody is getting "fat and rich off of "you". It's a popular little passing fancy we forum riders love to trot out now and again and pontificate on the societal malfeasances.

The sheer volume of virtual "IOU's" should have resulted in arrests but all parties are guilty of seeing that "enormous pile of ever increasing tax dollars", flowing into the Social Security accounts & deciding that they knew best about how the money should be used & "dipping into it" until the problem was to monstrous to hide. Sickening.

I know 5 on disability who can work. One cousin has been "depressed" for 10 years. Another cousin has fibromyalgia, but can afford and ride a Harley. Another cousin has hepatitis due to his drug use, but hasn't been sick in years. A friend has a "bad back", but can chop wood and do all kinds of physical work for cash.

All 5 of these want someone to take care of them.

While there may be some truth to your claim, EVERY ONE on disability has their cases reviewed by the SSA every couple of years. SSA reexamine the claims and makes a determination as to whether the claimants are still disabled. If not they are dropped from the program. Remember this, be it a Tom Coburn or his polar opposite such as a barbera boxer, each is a politician and each has their own political agenda for or against such programs. Don't believe the hype! They are simply mining for votes. They don't give a rats ass about who should or shouldn't be receiving ssdi or any other .government programs; so long as they get votes.

Get a lawyer that specializes in disability law

My 18 year old nephew had several tests today, as part of the review of his disability. The "tests" were something my 4 year old grandson could do easily. They showed him pictures of things, like blue cars, yellow cars,white shoes, black shoes,yellow houses, red houses, etc. He was asked to pick out a certain color car, house, or shoe on the placards.
He knows his colors, and he knows what shoes, houses and cars are. To make a long story short, the examiner said he passed all the tests, and he can work as a bagger in a grocery store, or a similar job. My nephew has speech that is very difficult to understand. If you are someone who is not around him an awful lot, you might be able to understand 10% of what he says. I can only understand about 70% of what he says, and I see him constantly. He substitutes an "S" for a "P" and vice versa, for a lot of his words, and some words are totally unintelligible. He stresses easy too, because most people cannot understand what he is saying, and he has trouble processing various tasks and other things.He has to be supervised in everything he does. He is moderately mentally retarded.
When we were done, and the examiner said my nephew could work,I gave the examiner a piece of my mind. It totally pisses me off, that alcoholics and drug users have no problem getting on disability, or staying on, but my nephew, who was born this way, and will always be like this, will probably be booted off the disability.
I called my sister-in-law, who is in the hospital, to tell her to fight this with an attorney. She has been raising my nephew and his siblings.
From what I have been told by an attorney who specializes in disability cases, both new cases and appeals, the government is booting people off disability, or denying disability to truly disabled people. The attorney told me, that Downs Syndrome clients and even people who are amputees in a wheelchair, and severe diabetics, are being kicked off, or denied.

The federal government is really pushing for people like your nephew to find real jobs and is coming down hard on jobs and programs that don't pay minimum wage. So they are essentially saying that someone like your nephew could compete sucessfully for the same job that your nephew would be. What stores have grocery baggers anymore btw? So they are going to have to do some type of "affirmative" action law for people like your nephew to force people to hire them and lose money (no offense) in an economy where businesses are already broke due to Obama care.

I'm on soc security disability and it's not a fraud. I am in my 40's and since age 21 have struggled to keep a job mostly due to attendance/improper interactions that made me stand out. Most of my issue has been depression and my mom killed herself from it...some people can shake themselves out of it/sometimes meds help..most of the times it doesn't. My mother was age 50 and paid into soc security for many years...i was too old to get money..so her contributions went to nobody. Most applicants are denied disability, then you before a judge and are rep'd by an attorney...after one hr of contstant questions..i was given one yr disability..getting less then 2 grand a month when my friends make 100k year in New York..isnt playing the system....i now might be breaking up with girlfriend...you think 1600 month can afford a rent for 750 month??

Humm most vets have something wrong with them.PTSD comes to mind as one thing.Many have severe emotional issues and a lot cant function in daily life.Its sad that people judge one another based on what they think they see.But the bottom line is usually due to envy because they think someone else is getting something they also feel entitled to but cant get for whatever reason.

I am curious, does disability check resources or is it for the disabled AND poor? I used to know this guy who lived with his parents, was on disability for some learning issue or ADD. He was a bright guy just was very lazy from what I recall. He told me a few times that he gets social security whenever conversations came up about wtf is he doing for work, and I really thought that wasn't fair to people who are poor. He didn't have work income but everything was taken care of from his parents who weren't rich but well off. Even if his disability is genuine, so what? I think living conditions and income of everyone in household should be taken into consideration. More attention should be given to disabled/elderly who need the money to live.

I live in a very conservative county. In my area they call SSD "Republican welfare".

Almost everyone I know of ,in this county, who collect SSD are NOT disabled.

I know it is difficult to get SSD if you are working. Some people go broke waiting for SSD. Some people don't care if they go broke waiting for SSD.

I know people with severe diabetes that work. I know people with severe heart problems that work. I know people with artificial limbs that work. I don't understand how some people that don't seem to have any problems doing anything can't work. I know there are lots of training programs for disabled people to get to a point where they can work.
