I expect a Russian response but I thought they would wait 'til all the athletes were expected to be out of Sochi, at least another day or two.

And indeed that might be the US calculation and plan for visible military support of the new regime in Ukraine, so Russia could want to strike faster even at the risk of stretching thin their security forces protecting the Olympics.

This should also be considered together with the US-Russia conflict in Syria and maybe other places not as obvious.
