How to BEAT Coming Food Shortages | |
binaryboy User ID: 2120845 Canada 02/25/2014 06:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well, to start, you need to change your expectations. I have no doubt that food prices will sky rocket and self reliance will be the best option. That being said, you may have to get away from the idea that you can just get any food item you want at any time of year. If you grow your own food, your geographic region will dictate what you can grow. You may not have the option of pineapple, and you'll have to come to terms with it. I promise that if you grow your own food, you'll be far healthier than if you continue to buy at your local grocery store. Even if you decide to stockpile food (and I recommend that everyone have a good supply of long shelf life food), you won't be able to last more than a year on that. You need to start prepping and adapt so that when changes hit, you can roll with the punches (a positive attitude is the most important thing to have). Start now instead of waiting until the crap hits the fan. |

I'm not sure how people will survive with cuts in food stamps, military disability, social security, and increased taxes and health care. No wonder our seconded amendment rights are in jeopardy. Gardeners will soon be in full force. I can see some of the milk and beef prices rising, but not chicken and pork and any spike in produce will just be temporary. It's not going to be the end of the world, in other words. Buy yourself some bags of $1 veggies and put them in your freezer until your local crops come in. |

Most people have become spoiled and wasteful though and have forgotten this. Beans, leafy greens (spinach) and potatoes will last a long time if properly stored. I suggest you take up fishing and small game hunting for an occasional bit of animal proteins and fat that your body needs for your brain...but meat is not necessary in every meal to survive. |

Very true - what I'm worried about is that the american diet even for people who have been trying has been the equivalent of tummy filler their whole lives. I'm interested in being able to eat healthy even with high prices and shortages. |

Sweet potatoes 7. Asparagus. 8. Beets This year putting in raspberries and cherry trees. Tomorrow ordering supplies to make cheese. I get my milk from 2 farms, raw, so no worries there. Meanwhile I am filling my freezer now with beef before the prices skyrocket. |

Begin eating tubs of butter and ice cream. Lots of bacon and spam is good too. Don't forget to wash it down with plenty of soda...and not diet soda. When TSHTF you will be light years ahead of the pack. And you will need to be. After a few weeks with no food when they see your fat butt you will be on the barbie in no time. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19473892 Exactly! Bacon right on your cereal each morning, and buy the cheap sodas too. It's like pouring syrup over ice. Yummmy. |

What this means for you." First, when you read this, see all the charts and see ALL the factors that are destroying the heart of our food growth, it's pretty bleak. I get depressed about it all the time. Then come some of the things you can do, with shortcuts. Apart from growing your own what do you do? So many things. Buy seasonal produce. you get the freshest product at lowest price. Google to see what is in season each month for your state. You'll pay a fortune for a hard, nasty tomato in Dec. in my area, but in late summer, a bushel can be had from a local farm for 4.00. Same with apples. In season, you can get them for 8-12 a bushel. They are good eaten fresh, delicious applesauce, muffins, apple dumplings, spiced apples, pies, etc. July is good for blueberries here. In season, they are real inexpensive, they dehydrate and freeze well. They make good jam and jelly. Between Halloween and Thanksgiving, flour, sugar, canned pumpkin, canned milk, and turkeys are on sale. People are accustomed to running to the store to buy what they need when they need it. If you buy what's on sale even if you don't need it, you'll save money. Eventually you'll have the luxury of being able to buy only sales because you have enough other things. Buy local produce, vegetables and fruits that you don't grow. Same with meat and/or eggs, and honey. If you make friends with your supplier, treat them well and let them know you appreciate them, you're going to rank up toward the top in being able to buy something if food becomes scarce. They don't forget that you supported them, rather than the grocery. Find how the animals are raised and treated, how they are killed and make sure you buy from humanely produced animals. If you eat meat, a half a beef can cost a pittance. It can be canned, frozen, smoked and/or dried. Many ways. 8) |
