I have to agree; There have been many incarnations of humans on this planet and some have reached extraordinary levels of technology only to be nearly wiped out and to start all over again, and again, and again, who knows how many times; the geologic record is full of evidence for world-wide catastrophes in the past.

Those most likely to survive would be those who lived relatively simple lives that did not depend on technology, people with real survival skills, think Appalachia.

The stories of 'gods' bringing civilization were in reality technologically adept survivors who perhaps rode out the disaster in some sort of shelter, like the bunkers governments around the world have constructed to save what they believe to be the most critical. Perhaps the Hopi tales of the ant people saving them are tales of just such a thing.

This seems far, far, far, more likely than alien visitation.
