Sculpture for DIA falls on New Mexico artist, 65, killing him

By Rocky Mountain News

June 14, 2006

The artist who had worked for more than a decade to complete a 32-foot sculpture for Denver International Airport called "Mustang" died today in an accident while trying to complete the work.

Luis Jimenez, 65, of Hondo, N.M., whose work has been displayed at the Smithsonian and the Museum of Modern Art., was injured while trying to move part of a sculpture with a hoist, according to the Lincoln County, N.M., Sheriff’s Office.

The piece came loose and pinned Jimenez against a steel support. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to the Associated Press.

Denver had commissioned the $300,000 sculpture for a centerpiece at DIA.

In a release from the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs and DIA, officials extended condolences to his family.

"Mr. Jimenez’s untimely death is a tragic loss for the nation’s art community," said DOCA director Erin Trapp.

"He will be remembered for his artistic vision, compassion and generosity through a rich legacy of artwork."

The city will meet with the local art community to determine how "Mustang" can be finished.

Jimenez was known for his large and colorful fiberglass sculptures that depicted fiesta dancers, a mourning Aztec warrior, steelworkers and illegal immigrants. His work often started arguments and spurred the emotions, the Associated Press reported.

Brings to mind Scripture that says 'lives by the sword, die by the sword'. That was quite an unGodly evil looking horse.
