Oldest Known Cheese Discovered Buried with Mummies in China
Scientists have identified yellowish lumps from tombs in north-west China as cheese that is about 3,600 years old, they say.

Archeologists from Germany and China sampled the material, which was collected from 10 graves and mummies at the Xiaohe cemetery in the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang.

Chemical analysis of the proteins revealed that the lumps were kefir cheese, dating as far back as 1615 B.C. They may have been intended as a tribute to the dead or food for the afterlife.

Those people were not Chinese, they were Caucasians. The mummies are somewhat of an embarrassment to the Chinese. The people were similar to those living now in Eastern Europe.

That explains the lactose intolerace issue.

Re: Oldest Known Cheese Discovered Buried with Mummies in China
Heard this story the other day

Cheese making dates back more than 4,000 years and is believed to have originated in Asia, spreading to Europe and eventually the rest of the world. Though the name of the very first cheese monger is unknown, an ancient legend tells us that the first cheese may have been made accidentally by an Arabian merchant, who carried a supply of milk in a pouch made from a sheep’s stomach, as he set out across the desert. It is said that the rennet of the pouch’s lining combined with the heat of the sun, caused the milk to separate into curd (cheese) and whey.

Dumbass, the Chinese from Western and Northern China have eaten a kind of cheese and butter for aeons. Only some Chinese from Eastern and Southern regions are lactose intolerant and that is intolerant to bovine cow milk. They are not intolerant to goats ' or yaks' milk.

The Chinese in Yunnan make butter and cheese from yaks' milk, those in Northern and Western China use mares' milk. yoda
