Check out these 2 random Radio Shack Catalogs I picked and linked to below (1985 and 2010) and scroll through the first 50 pages. This is why Radio Shack is dead IMHO.

RadioShack plans to close up to 1,100 of its underperforming stores in the U.S. and reported a wider loss for its fourth quarter as traffic slowed during the critical holiday season.

There is nothing better than old technology.

This new stuff is made to break and to be thrown away. I used to love getting misc parts and building something. You really cant do that any more with this new stuff.

Oh no!! Now where will I go to purchase my grossly overpriced electronics??? Where will I go to buy a $50 HDMI cable or a $35 USB extension that I can get on Amazon for $8??!!
 Quoting: Hitokiri

That's right, but you can get that connection from Radio Shack right now and not wait days for ebay or Amazon. I drove 16 miles last week for a 1/8 mini jack to RCA connector.

They should have stayed a store where people could go to purchase electronic components. Instead they became a store with snotty, arrogant, rude and aggressive salesboys pushing crappy cell phones.

And everything costs twice as much as anywhere else
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1349589

BINGO on both counts.

Obviously, two kain things are killing them off:

1) People just don't bother fixing consumer goods, including electrpnics, anymore, they jus;t go out a buy a new one. Most of the consumer products we buy today aren't meant to be fixed, they'rethrow away. If it lasts a year you still made out because it 3as so cheap to begin with. I expect the tablet I'm using right now to last 2, maybe 3 years, before at a minimum the battery craps out; but by then newer generation models, with better specs and operating systems, will be available for dirt cheap prices. It makes no sense to replace the battery or fix a problem. As for phones, IMO, even the relatively expensive droids and iphones are likewise throwaway. You should get at least 2 years out of them, maybe 3. MANY people will simply replace the phone or tablet aftet 1 year.

2) Internet sales. It's very easy and generally much cheaper to order stuff you would have gone to stores like Radio Shack online.

Re: RadioShack to close up to 1,100 US stores
The last time I stepped into a Radio Shack was to buy a CR2032 battery. They didn't have it (although it is a commonly used battery) -- but the sales person did question me about my cell phone needs. At the time I had to carry two cell phones and a pager (due to work) -- so I didn't need another phone. Needless to say I've never been back to the Shack -- and that was in the mid 2000's.

Cell phones is what killed CompUSA. They were a thriving store until they switched over to cell phones & then they died quickly.
 Quoting: mopar28m

Yep, I dont think a Fry's closed anywhere. [link to www.frys.com] Radio Shack used to be just like them. You could go in and buy just about any part for electronics. That's a nice niche. Now every store is trying to sell the same thing.

I liked the smallness that Radio Shack used to be. Fry's is good but just too fucking huge.

They should have stuck with the specialty electronics and components, instead of trying to compete with best buy or walmart. The last time I was there I was looking for transistors but only found cell phones and junk.

Yup, I still have a high end Radio Shack table radio (which my parents now have) that is still going strong since its purchase in 1980. The only thing that went out on it is the dial light -- and that's after all those years of daily use...

This^^

Radio Shack used to corner the market in a lot of products, now it is just one option out of many. Their prices are too high and their employees are a bunch of asshats in general.

You can't blame Obama for Radio Shack's bad business model.
