There was some initial discrepancy as to when the plane went missing that may have delayed rescue efforts. The airline first claimed it had lost contact with flight MH370 at 2:40 a.m. local time (1:40 p.m. Eastern or 6:40 p.m. GMT), or two hours after takeoff. But Flightradar24, an online aircraft tracking service, says the plane went missing 40 minutes after takeoff. “It took 11 hours until about 03:00 UTC until a search and rescue operation was started in the area of Gulf of Thailand where Flightradar24 reported lost radar contact,” notes the website in a Facebook post. “It feels very frustrating that the incorrect reports of lost contact after 2 hours has made that Flightradar24 data of lost contact after 40 minutes, has been ignored for so many hours.” The Associated Press notes the plane was last seen on the radar at around 1:30 a.m. local time (12:30 p.m. Eastern) right before it entered Vietnam’s air traffic control.

The USA has a database that tracks stolen passports. Not every country has this. It's not known yet if Malaysia has/uses the technology.

This sets up nice for a new "international travel ID system" that would force every person on the planet to have a type of passport (With security chip) when using planes, trains, buses, subways, etc.

Malaysia is an Islam country under sharia law. The country owns the airline and control the media. They know what happened but will not admit it. The circumstances in which the crash occurred will remain "unsolved". Just like Malaysia flight 653 in 1977.

Iridium Communications has a new service called Aireon that 5 major air navigation service providers (ANSP) have signed on for when it becomes operational in a few years (first satellite to be launched in 2015). Using the Iridium LEO (low earth orbit) constellation, this system will be able to track all planes (equipped with a transceiver) anywhere on the globe (pole to pole). NAV Canada, NAV Portugal, NATS (UK) and the Irish Aviation Authority have all signed up to be customers of this service (and in some cases, investors) while the US FAA is still analyzing the program. If AIREON were operational today (and the southeast Asian ANSPs were customers) we would know EXACTLY where the Malaysian plane went down…and in the event that there were potential survivors, rescue planes could be on the scene in fairly short order. With the present patchwork of radar and radio communications, it might be weeks if not months before we find the wreckage. The FAA should sign onto Aireon ASAP and encourage all ANSPs around the globe to act accordingly. By the time Aireon is fully operational in 2018, we will never see another column headlined “How can a Boeing….suddenly lose all contact”.
