Going to Nepal, should I get vaccinated?
So I'm going to Nepal at the end of this month, and most are saying to get vaccinated for things like Hep A/B and Typhoid.

Of course I'm wary of contracting these diseases, but I'm also shying away from vaccines as a whole.

Any thoughts from anyone who has visited Nepal or lives there?

Some background..............

I'm doing a bit of a trekking trip, starting in Kathmandu and Pokhara; from there I'm going through villages along a small section of the Annapurna range.

I've got my filter and water purification tablets on hand, but that is only going to go so far.

Thoughts?

Please and thank you.

Typhoid can be treated with antibiotics if you come down with it.

Five stars for a really useful thread. For those of us contemplating what you're doing, and other similar ventures, let's aggregate useful info. I agree with passing on the vaccines, though I'd bring vitamins and supplements for high elevation. A second filter is always a good idea as backup and as a gift when you leave.

How high will you be trekking, and are you acclimated to high elevation? Please post back when you return and fill in the blanks for those of us who are considering these things.

Its a cesspit of diseases and parasites.
There is no sanitation for most of the region, so the landscape is a public toilet

Thank you, I absolutely will update this thread. May even post while I'm over there.

I can't wait to go, but debating on whether to get vaccinated is aggravating me. I stopped Flu shots for sure about three years ago. Have only been sick with minor colds since, whereas when I took the Flu shots I got pneumonia one year, and the flu another...

I think I'll pass on the vaccines.

The highest elevation I'll be reaching is Poon Hill, which is 10,475 feet.

...Which is a far cry from where I live in Massachusetts, at 112 feet, hahaha.

Honestly, the only thing I think I have to watch out for is water. I know how to ask for filtered water in Nepali.

I can always ask where the "trusted" restaurants are.

Were that actually true and not West-sponsored propaganda I'm sure I'd find some facts from those that have been.

I know that Nepal has a trash problem, and that it is a "third-world country" and whatever, but that doesn't mean it's medieval Europe.

The mountain side of Nepal is probably much freer from disease than the jungle side. Good hygiene matters. There are plenty of places in the USA that are 10,500 or greater, and people live there. Think Aspen. Acclimatization can take a while, and sometimes you get a bad day seven days in. Some folks never have a problem, others do. Spirulina is said to help. Have fun, and let us know if it's a good place to go with a girlfriend.
