CNN states earlier that the plane is equipped with an ELT. It's basically a transponder. It's purpose identifies the location at impact. The transponder only will relay a signal when the pilot flips the switch or when there is impact. As of now, the transponder hasn't relayed a signal, therefore the plane has not crashed.
