JUST IN: Last week's record decline in foreign holdings of U.S. Treasuries has led some to speculate that Russia has been cutting its dollar reserves ahead of possible sanctions from the West.

"It will be harder to make a new high (on the S&P 500) with these global and geopolitical effects overhanging," said Andre Bakhos, managing director at Janlyn Capital in Bernardsville, New Jersey.

"I don't know if these warnings signs result in dire results, but they are certainly to be considered when making a macro bet."

JUST IN: The Chinese central bank's decision to relax its grip on the yuan has been welcomed as a sign of financial liberalization, but it is aggravating concerns among foreign executives and investors about their exposure to China in the near term.

Companies that sign billions of dollars worth of trade contracts with Chinese firms, and foreign investors considering whether to hedge their China bets, may well reduce their level of exposure.

The yuan ended trading on Friday at 6.15 per dollar and is down 1.6 percent so far this year, its sharpest fall since during the Greek debt crisis in 2012.

"We still expect RMB appreciation to 5.98 versus the USD by the end of 2014, but the path will be volatile," they wrote in a client note.

In a sign that the central bank has succeeded in adding uncertainty to the direction of the yuan, dealers said sentiment has remained subdued even though intervention by state owned banks has wound down in the last week or so.

One answer might be "about 2,100." But a better answer is: more gas stations than it owns in any other single country in the world, including Russia itself, and more gas stations than it owns elsewhere in the rest of the world, combined. In other words, it has leveraged its initial $71 million investment in Getty into making Lukoil arguably a "U.S.-based gasoline chain."

Gas supply drying up at BP

WORCESTER — The pumps are bone dry at area BP gas stations all through Central Massachusetts and BP can thank Getty Petroleum Marketing for filing Chapter 11, which appears to be the catalyst for the empty tanks.

Central Massachusetts BP gas stations are owned by Getty Realty Corp. and were part of a package of 797 outlets that were subleased to Getty Petroleum Marketing Inc., a subsidiary of Lukoil Americas Corp.

In 2009, BP signed a deal with Green Valley Oil LLC in East Providence to rebrand 235 stations in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Massachusetts from Lukoil and Getty flags.

Getty Petroleum Marketing Inc. filed for bankruptcy on Dec. 5 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York.

On April 2, the bankruptcy court ordered Green Valley Oil LLC to pay $18.9 million in fixed rent (for December through February), as well as the fixed rent for March (the amount was not indicated on the order) by the end of the month. Also, by the end of the month, Green Valley Oil is to surrender all its properties to Getty Properties.
