Mars is the planet to watch now! It’s becoming much more conspicuous in our sky. It began retrograde motion on March 1, a sure sign that its opposition is approaching. At opposition on April 8, Earth will be passing between the sun and Mars. It’ll be rising at sunset then. Our sweep between the sun and Mars marks the middle of the best time to see Mars in two years! Dwarfing all of the ordinary active regions, a pair of dark magnetic filaments are stretching across the almost-entire circumference of the sun's southern hemisphere. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture mid-day on March 19th APPROACHING MARS: Count slowly: one one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand.... You're now 30 km closer to the planet Mars. Earth and Mars are converging for a close encounter in April 2014, an event astronomers call "opposition." At closest approach on April 14th, burnt-orange Mars will rise in the east at sunset and soar almost overhead at midnight shining 8 times brighter than a 1st magnitude star. Even now the view is impressive: [link to www.spaceweather.com] Susie For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.....Matthew 6:21 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: Ecclesiastes 3:1 |
