Airman Missing From Patrick Air Force Base

Patrick Air Force Base officials are searching for Airman First Class Rick Sites, an air traffic controller, who disappeared after driving away in a friend’s pewter Chevrolet Silverado nine days ago, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
Sites, of the 45th Space Wing, left the base at 8 a.m. on June 7th dressed in camouflage and with a cell phone in hand. He carried no identificatio -- his driver’s license, military ID card and credit cards were left behind. The car's Florida license tag read I59 KAM.
"The most important thing here is that he is okay. We really want him to understand he's a part of the Air Force family," Patrick AFB spokesman Ken Warren said. "His family is also very concerned."
Sites is in his early 20s, weighs about 190 pounds and is 5 feet 11 inches with brown hair and brown eyes. He has no tattoos or other distinguishing traits.
"At this point, our investigators are working with civilian law enforcement," said Patrick AFB spokesman Ken Warren. "We have sent out a be-on-the-lookout advisory enlisting their support."
Officials have also contacted Sites' family, which has not heard from him since he vanished.
Warren cited privacy laws and could not say where Sites is originally from, but did reveal he is from out of state.
He said Sites arrived at Patrick in February 2005.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the 45th Security Forces Squadron at 494-2000.

CAPE CANAVERAL - A body with a white plastic bag over the head was identified as that of an airman who disappeared from Patrick Air Force Base two weeks ago, an autopsy confirmed Thursday.
Police think 20-year-old Rick Sites might have been trying to reach euphoria by depriving himself of oxygen and accidentally suffocated.
No foul play is suspected in the death of the air traffic controller with the 45th Space Wing, whose body was found inside a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup east of State Road A1A late Wednesday, Brevard County Sheriff's Office investigators said.
"He was a dedicated patriot who loved his family and his country. He will be greatly missed by the Patrick Air Force Base community," Brig. Gen. Susan Helms, commander of the 45th Space Wing, said in an e-mailed statement.
Patrick officials are planning a memorial service, but haven't set a date, said Ken Warren, 45th Space Wing spokesman.
Sites was last seen June 7 leaving the base in the vehicle, which belonged to a friend. The base reported him absent without leave last week.
Soon after, base officials sent out a "be-on-the-lookout" advisory to local law enforcement.
Investigators think Sites stopped, with the engine idling, in a lightly used parking lot near the 500 block of Thurm Boulevard. The vehicle then apparently ran out of gas, Brevard sheriff's Agent Gary Harrell said.
"It was hard for me to even see anything in it, and I was standing right next to it," Harrell said of the pickup.
The body, obscured by dark-tinted windows, was found reclining in the driver's seat. In gym shorts' pockets was an identification card and cash. Stored in the back of the truck cab was a camouflage uniform, boots and golf clubs.
"It appears to be suffocation. It was an accidental death," Harrell said.
Sites had been looking forward to soon being closer to home. He planned to transfer to a Missouri base, his father, Rickie Sites, said last week.
His father said that the last time he talked to his son, May 27, he was "in good spirits."
Since Sites arrived at Patrick in February, he did his job in a
quiet and thoughtful manner,
Helms said.
"I'd like to express our deepest sympathies to Airman Sites' family. They are in our thoughts and prayers," Helms said.
During Sites' disappearance, one mystery was that his military identification, credit cards and driver's license remained in his single-resident dorm room, Warren said.
Sites' father, who lives in Booneville, Ark., was in Brevard County on Thursday and was told about the discovery of the body, said Harrell, who also spoke with Patrick officials.
It will take six to eight weeks for toxicology tests to be completed, Harrell said.

Ok first off, for those who have never been in the military, let me point out a thing or two.
Number one: military personnel NEVER and I repeat NEVER are without their military ID, let alone ID in general. The two stories are very conflicting. The first says he left all his ID behind, including driver's lisence and military ID. Then in the second story they miraculously find some kind of ID card on him. I smell a rat big time. My husband was in the military and I was not even allowed outside without my spousal ID on me. It was just a rule. And he was a very happy, in good spirits person who was a patriot and loved his family dearly? People don't just suffocate for no reason, especially with a plastic bad over their heads. I don't buy the self-suffocation crap to reach ecstasy at all. This guy was off'd for some reason. And the airforce's response of being all sweet and caring, "we just want him to know it's ok," that's a load of shit. If he had truly taken off, he would be considered AWOL and they don't take too well to that. Wonder what he was killed for. |

Excuse my ignorance - I'm English - but WTF part of the US Air Force is "Space Wing"....and why are there, presumably, at least 45 of them?
Also, is it assumed he pulled the bag over his head himself (entirely possible, I believe, if he was into that sort of stuff), or did someone else do it to him?

they are as nutty as ATCs are.
And you are correct, Merlin. There are
quite a few "Space" wings under Space
Command. They handle everything to do
with satellites and missiles. Patrick
AFB is next to the Kennedy Space Center
so it makes sense than the communications
squadron he belonged to was part of
a wing under Space Command. There used
to be a separate "Communications Command"
but that got merged with several others
a couple of decades ago. Here is a list

was an A1C he was barely out of tech
school. You can buy whatever you want
but you can't add this up to "he knew

Airman First Class is the next step up
from an Airman in basic training. People
who have ROTC get to go into basic with
that rank, but most make that right out
of basic.
