The Apache, Comanche, Navajo, Hopi, etc., lived there for thousands of years.
The Spain claimed it for hundreds of years, but with a miniscule presence.
The Anglo spent a hundred and fifty... trillions of dollars building up the South West.
Mexicans never owned Texas and only owned the rest (in theory, not practicality) for a couple of decade, yet everybody thinks it belongs to them.
