Liberians in 'Panic' Over Ebola, Need Doctors: President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

World | Agence France-Presse | Updated: August 01, 2014 12:26 IST
[link to www.ndtv.com]

Washington: Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf appealed for more doctors and supplies to help West African nations battle an outbreak of deadly Ebola, warning on Thursday the crisis was "nearing a catastrophe.

Early denial about the dangers of the contagious disease among Liberians has now "turned into fear and panic," she told CNN in an interview over Skype.

"There are dead bodies all over the place and they now know that it's real. They know that it's deadly and they are now beginning to respond," Ms Sirleaf said.

"This is very, very serious, it's very nearing a catastrophe."

Media reports on Ebola infections in doctors and missionaries appear to be driven by false negatives. Initial symptoms of Ebola can mimic Malaria, which is not infectious. Ebola is detected in blood, but initial testing can produce false negatives because a positive requires relatively high viral loads. The PPE's being used for suspected Ebola cases is very cumbersome to put on and take off and are also very hot. Thus, such PPE's are not used while treating non-infectious patients, such as those who are thought to have malaria because Ebola tests are negative.

The large number of HCWs and missionaries in Monrovia and Lagos appear to be driven by these false negatives.

Ebola - 66 Americans cleared after Lisbon stopover

[link to theportugalnews.com]

A group of 66 American passengers on a flight from Sierra Leone were yesterday examined for traces of the Ebola virus by Portuguese authorities during a stopover in Lisbon before heading to the United States.

Local health officials said that none of the passengers presented any symptoms of the dreaded virus.

Comment: I expect this "examination" consisted of a couple questions and temperature taking only. I believe that the New Ebola is infectious before symptoms appear. Thus, nothing was achieved here.

I just don't see any indication that it's airborne yet. The infection patterns just don't show that. My humble opinion, of course.

SEVERAL BRITONS QUARANTINED FOR EBOLA AMIDST CLAIMS THE VIRUS MAY BE AIRBORNE

by ANDRE WALKER 6 Aug 2014, 7:06 AM PDT
[link to www.breitbart.com]

Several British nationals have been voluntarily quarantined with suspected Ebola, according to the Daily Telegraph. The admission came from public health officials and follows revelations an individual in Cardiff had expressed fears they had contracted the disease.

The exact number of people quarantined and their exact location have not been confirmed, but they are believed to be spread across the UK. The problem faced by public health authorities is that tests for Ebola are ineffective until the patients show symptoms. This means that they have to wait up to 21 days, which is the maximum incubation period.

The World Health Organisation has also claimed that the virus is spreading faster than they can control. This may be because of a misunderstanding about how the virus is transmitted, in 2012 a study suggested that Ebola may be transmitted through the air.

Whilst the study was not conclusive the BBC reported that Canadian scientists had found that Ebola had been transmitted between animals that had never come into direct contact. This suggests that the current theory that it is only transmitted by exchange of bodily fluids may be wrong.

Ebola Victim’s Death: FG, Lagos Launch Manhunt for Co-passengers
[link to www.nursingworldnigeria.com]
27/Jul/2014

Following the death of an Ebola virus victim from Liberia, Patrick Sawyer, in Lagos, on Thursday, the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have jointly launched a manhunt for some of the passengers of the airplane that brought the late Liberian into the country, Sunday Newswatch has learnt.

[snip]

We just came back from a big man’s house. We went there with officials of Lagos, but the family said the man left for London yesterday.

“Though we don’t believe them, we have told the airport people to check the manifest of all airlines that left for London yesterday (Friday). We need to confirm his whereabouts,” he said.

Comments: Heads Up, London! He should be showing symptoms any time now....

The Ebola virus is able to turn off the body’s natural immune response.
But researchers at Auburn University believe they’ve developed an “on-switch.”
Quoting: NawtyBits

Simply known by its lab identification number, WY3161 is a relatively small molecule. The compound appears to reverse the immune-blocking effects of certain viruses, including Ebola, when tested on cells from green monkeys.

“In the future, what we learn from how viruses turn off the immune system is going to open up these other 10 or 12 categories of viruses,” said Stewart Schneller, the Auburn chemistry professor leading the study. “There may be leads there.”

The Auburn team is working in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and plans to publish details of its findings later this month in the journal Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry. [link to www.foxnews.com]

Patrick Sawyer's last hours at Spriggs

[link to www.thenewdawnliberia.com]

Images from a Close Circuit Television (CCTV) monitored here at the James Spriggs Payne’s Airport have shown how the late Patrick Sawyer was terribly ill before boarding the Nigeria bond flight.

The late Sawyer from the recording, it appears he knew, he had been infected by the deadly tropical disease. His behavior, among other passengers waiting at the boarding gate was strange.

His face bore a sad countenance like someone who was troubled, as he sat alone avoiding body contacts with everyone who came close by him.

His strange behavior and frequent movement up and down as he eagerly awaits his ASky flight had prompted the security camera operator to focus on him. In the video, Patrick could be seen avoiding physical contacts with airport employees and other passengers during the check in process.

Case Definition for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)

[link to www.cdc.gov]

Early recognition is critical for infection control. Healthcare providers should be alert for and evaluate any patients suspected of having EVD.

Suspected Case

Illness in a person who has both consistent symptoms and risk factors as follows: 1) Clinical criteria, which includes fever of greater than 38.6 degrees Celsius or 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit, and additional symptoms such as severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or unexplained hemorrhage; AND 2) Epidemiologic risk factors within the past 3 weeks before the onset of symptoms, such as contact with blood or other body fluids of a patient known to have or suspected to have EVD; residence in—or travel to—an area where EVD transmission is active; or direct handling of bats, rodents, or primates from disease-endemic areas. Malaria diagnostics should also be a part of initial testing because it is a common cause of febrile illness in persons with a travel history to the affected countries.

UPDATE 1-U.S. FDA authorizes use of diagnostic test to detect Ebola

Aug 6 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday said a diagnostic test developed by the Department of Defense to detect Ebola has been authorized for use in helping to contain the world's worst outbreak of the deadly virus.

EBOLA

EBOLA VIRUS

PATHOGEN SAFETY DATA SHEET - INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES

[link to www.phac-aspc.gc.ca]

INFECTIOUS DOSE: 1 - 10 aerosolized organisms are sufficient to cause infection in humans

MODE OF TRANSMISSION:
In an outbreak, it is hypothesized that the first patient becomes infected as a result of contact with an infected animal (15). Person-to-person transmission occurs via close personal contact with an infected individual or their body fluids during the late stages of infection or after death (1, 2, 15, 27). Nosocomial infections can occur through contact with infected body fluids due to the reuse of unsterilized syringes, needles, or other medical equipment contaminated with these fluids (1, 2). Humans may be infected by handling sick or dead non-human primates and are also at risk when handling the bodies of deceased humans in preparation for funerals, suggesting possible transmission through aerosol droplets (2, 6, 28). In the laboratory, infection through small-particle aerosols has been demonstrated in primates, and airborne spread among humans is strongly suspected, although it has not yet been conclusively demonstrated (1, 6, 13). The importance of this route of transmission is not clear. Poor hygienic conditions can aid the spread of the virus

INCUBATION PERIOD: Two to 21 days, more often 4 - 9 days

RESERVOIR:
The natural reservoir of Ebola is unknown

SUSCEPTIBILITY TO DISINFECTANTS: Ebola virus is susceptible to sodium hypochlorite, lipid solvents, phenolic disinfectants, peracetic acid, methyl alcohol, ether, sodium deoxycholate, 2% glutaraldehyde, 0.25% Triton X-100, β-propiolactone, 3% acetic acid (pH 2.5), formaldehyde and paraformaldehyde, and detergents such as SDS

PHYSICAL INACTIVATION: Ebola are moderately thermolabile and can be inactivated by heating for 30 minutes to 60 minutes at 60ºC, boiling for 5 minutes, gamma irradiation (1.2 x106 rads to 1.27 x106 rads), and/or UV radiation

SURVIVAL OUTSIDE HOST:
The virus can survive in liquid or dried material for a number of days (23). Infectivity is found to be stable at room temperature or at 4°C for several days, and indefinitely stable at -70°C (6, 20). Infectivity can be preserved by lyophilisation.

Comment: According to this. ONE ebola virus can cause infection. One.

EBOLA-US

In regards to the NY case, the samples were sent to CDC on Monday, but won't even arrive until today. Then testing will take a while. That appears to be the reason we haven't heard anything yet.

May I be the first to call massive Bullshit on this one. There is no way that it took 3 days to get there... what was it standard shipping through USPS? Freaking snail mail has overnight....

The DoD EZ1 Real-time RT-PCR Assay, an in vitro diagnostic that has not yet been approved, was authorized for use in laboratories designated by the Department of Defense to help respond to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the FDA said.

In this thread here: Thread: BREAKING FDA says diagnotic test developed to detect Ebola

post about how it appears to be the same test which is already being used?

From OP's link

EZ1 RT-PCR is the test...

They are already using a PCR in Africa and it's got lots of false negatives.

From the previous link

We have recently confirmed a case of acute yellow fever with fulminating hepatic failure by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) (2)

Yes it says yellow fever but this test is used to determine many different diseases.

Doing a quick Google search it appears this EZ1 RT-PCR is nothing new!

Makes me wonder if maybe they are trying to reduce some fears with announcing they have developed a new test and people won't research it to find out, it pretty much already exists!
