The Health Ministry says the Saudi man died Wednesday morning in a hospital in Jiddah. He was hospitalized after showing symptoms of a viral hemorrhagic fever following a recent trip to Sierra Leone, where there has been an outbreak of Ebola.

Washington: Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf appealed for more doctors and supplies to help West African nations battle an outbreak of deadly Ebola, warning on Thursday the crisis was "nearing a catastrophe.

Early denial about the dangers of the contagious disease among Liberians has now "turned into fear and panic," she told CNN in an interview over Skype.

"There are dead bodies all over the place and they now know that it's real. They know that it's deadly and they are now beginning to respond," Ms Sirleaf said.

"This is very, very serious, it's very nearing a catastrophe."

Media reports on Ebola infections in doctors and missionaries appear to be driven by false negatives. Initial symptoms of Ebola can mimic Malaria, which is not infectious. Ebola is detected in blood, but initial testing can produce false negatives because a positive requires relatively high viral loads. The PPE's being used for suspected Ebola cases is very cumbersome to put on and take off and are also very hot. Thus, such PPE's are not used while treating non-infectious patients, such as those who are thought to have malaria because Ebola tests are negative.

The large number of HCWs and missionaries in Monrovia and Lagos appear to be driven by these false negatives.

Problems in Monrovia appear to be linked to American Patrick Sawyer's sister, Patience Sawyer. She was a contact of Dr Sam Mutooro Muhumuza who treated patients in Monrovia. When he developed symptoms, she insisted that he did not have Ebola and she then cared for him at his home.

He was subsequently Ebola confirmed and died.

When Patience Sawyer developed symptoms, including heavy bleeding, she was brought to the hospital by her fiancee, who said she was having a miscarriage. She then received a D&C which did not stop the bleeding. She was treated by Dr Patrick Nshamdze, St. Joseph Catholic Hospital Chief Administrator.

He subsequently developed symptoms, but tested negative. He later tested positive and died August 1, leading to the closure of the hospital.

When Patience Sawyer was assigned to an isolation ward, her brother, naturalized American Patrick Sawyer, intervened. He insisted that his sister did not have Ebola. He changed her clothes and wheeled her to a private room. His shoes were drenched in his sister's blood. He paid $500 cash to ensure that his sister was in a private room and not in isolation.

His sister subsequently was Ebola confirmed and she died.

Naturalized American, Patrick Sawyer, was a consultant for the Liberian Department of Finance. He flew to Lagos, Nigeria for a conference. He took one pane to Accra, Ghana and another plane to Lome, Togo and Lagos Nigeria. He developed symptoms (vomiting and diarrhea) in flight.

When he went to hospital he denied contact with any Ebola cases and was diagnosed with Malaria. He subsequently was diagnosed with Ebola and died. A female doctor who treated him has been Ebola confirmed and 8 additional HCW contacts are symptomatic and quarantined. 6 more HCWs (close contacts) are being closely watched and are not yet symptomatic.

Dr Patrick Nshamdze, St. Joseph Catholic Hospital Chief Administrator had been infected by Patience Sawyer, but he initially tested negative. Subsequently Brother Miguel Pajares, a missionary at the hospital developed symptoms and was Ebola confirmed.

Although weak, he is scheduled to be Medvac'ed out of Monrovia to Spain after 60,000 signatures were gathered at change.org to petition Spain to re-patriot him to Madrid.

3-6 additional missionaries are infected and in the hospital, which has been closed.

Several British nationals have been voluntarily quarantined with suspected Ebola, according to the Daily Telegraph. The admission came from public health officials and follows revelations an individual in Cardiff had expressed fears they had contracted the disease.

The exact number of people quarantined and their exact location have not been confirmed, but they are believed to be spread across the UK. The problem faced by public health authorities is that tests for Ebola are ineffective until the patients show symptoms. This means that they have to wait up to 21 days, which is the maximum incubation period.

The World Health Organisation has also claimed that the virus is spreading faster than they can control. This may be because of a misunderstanding about how the virus is transmitted, in 2012 a study suggested that Ebola may be transmitted through the air.

Whilst the study was not conclusive the BBC reported that Canadian scientists had found that Ebola had been transmitted between animals that had never come into direct contact. This suggests that the current theory that it is only transmitted by exchange of bodily fluids may be wrong.

Images from a Close Circuit Television (CCTV) monitored here at the James Spriggs Payne’s Airport have shown how the late Patrick Sawyer was terribly ill before boarding the Nigeria bond flight.

The late Sawyer from the recording, it appears he knew, he had been infected by the deadly tropical disease. His behavior, among other passengers waiting at the boarding gate was strange.

His face bore a sad countenance like someone who was troubled, as he sat alone avoiding body contacts with everyone who came close by him.

His strange behavior and frequent movement up and down as he eagerly awaits his ASky flight had prompted the security camera operator to focus on him. In the video, Patrick could be seen avoiding physical contacts with airport employees and other passengers during the check in process.

UPDATE 1-U.S. FDA authorizes use of diagnostic test to detect Ebola

Aug 6 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday said a diagnostic test developed by the Department of Defense to detect Ebola has been authorized for use in helping to contain the world's worst outbreak of the deadly virus.

The DoD EZ1 Real-time RT-PCR Assay, an in vitro diagnostic that has not yet been approved, was authorized for use in laboratories designated by the Department of Defense to help respond to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the FDA said.

In regards to the NY case, the samples were sent to CDC on Monday, but won't even arrive until today. Then testing will take a while. That appears to be the reason we haven't heard anything yet.
