Just spoke with a friend who has been working in epidemiology for over a decade (including many trips to Uganda and Kenya) - he stated that this presents every indication of being capable of airborne transmission.

NOT GOOD

How is airborne differentiated from bodily fluids (such as saliva, etc)?

or. be in a lift they were in.....

or.. be anywhere near the ventlation that oushes around the same air.. this is how virulant this shit is... survival of the virus is imperative, and still being studied and tracked....

"Airborne" in the context of Ebola-Zaire means

- a cough from a contagious person in an elevator or small office is essentially a death sentence for everyone in that space at that time, or who enters immediately thereafter

- The HVAC system (or even a natural breeze blowing) in a commercial building could distribute the virus into every room and hallway, making containment nearly impossible without severely quarantining all public spaces and issuing wide swaths of mandatory "shelter in place" orders

- Level-1 (physical contact) isolation is insufficient for containment in hospitals and clinics. Containment will also require full segregation of air-handling in hospital and clinic waiting rooms, Emergency Departments, and isolation wards, which is beyond what 95% of Africa is capable of providing.

In short, "Airborne" means it is already beyond controlability...
 Quoting: BattlesightZero

yeah, just told you all that...

if there is a 'sniff' of anything funny?.. stay at home for a day or two.....
It's life as we know it, but only just.

How many people could this dude in Canada conceivably have infected if he is actually part of this outbreak? It's only been a few days or a week since he's been hospitalized and was potentially linked to what's going on in West Africa.
 Quoting: Em18966

Realistically speaking every single person on the plane the guy was on. Every single person he has come in contact with. If it IS Airborne...Then a heck of a lot more people then that.

I have had nightmares about Ebola.. Its one of the nastier ways to go. I sure hope it isn't airborne, because if it is..We are going to witness a massive die-off in those countries that have infected people.

In Europe and North America, avoiding airports and places of "international interest" should be good enough for right now, but once it arrives it will branch out rapidly.

By the time they start reporting on it in, it will already be awfully late to self quarantine, but do it anyway.

Keep the pantry stocked, and be prepared to take a "stay-cation" on short notice. A few days won't be sufficient... think in terms of weeks - minimum 4 weeks, and NO definite upper bound, as it will depend on how it moves through the population in your area.

If you are an apartment/condo dweller in any sizable city, this is your wakeup call, right now - Good time to plan a visit with relatives in the country...

Not to change the subject but here in Thailand in a small village we have had over 20 deaths from either the bird or swine flu. Nothing seen on any sites that track such things and only mention I have seen is of one man dying in chiang mai. I know this is not bs because one of my close friends daughters got it and was hospitalized for 10 days. She recovered. It has been hard to find information as there would appear to be a cover up. This is Thailand tourist season. The crematorium is not located far from where I live so when someone dies its hard to miss, due to the fire work activities associated with a death here. Things seem to have calmed down a little but as I said no one is talking about it news wise, so everything comes word of mouth.

Cases of death are increasing since this
article - of March 1st. Now 20.
Do you live in one of the affected
(mentioned in article) areas?
Stay safe.

Yep, like I said 20 people have died in the village just up the road from me, Tu La Kon, in the chiang dao district provence of Chaing Mai. Not to worried I have sodium chlorite and it kills all known viruses. Ya.

In regards to ebola mutating, all of you are assuming that mutations happen randomly, undirected. Think avatar, the movie, where there is a guiding force behind evolution and hence mutations. Let the culling begin, for when nature is threatened and it involves the continuation of life on the planet, nature will fight back. Take care my friends.

Of the total 83,000-square-foot building, 12,362 square feet will be devoted to biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) research.

....for work with "dangerous and exotic agents that pose a high individual risk of aerosol-transmitted laboratory infections and life-threatening disease,"

....numerous levels of security for entry. Such labs study diseases including anthrax, Ebola, SARS, and others.

The laboratory, expected to open in the summer of 2008, will be one of the most secure and sophisticated in the world, according to Texas Congressman Tom DeLay, who was on hand for the opening.

The NIH provided $110 million in grants for the facility.

SNPRC houses more than 160 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). The Center is one of only five large research centers in the United States with the specialized experience and facilities to care for these great apes.

Chimpanzees have been used as models for infectious disease research, and were critical to the development of vaccines for Hepatitis A and B. Currently, their most extensive use is in developing and testing vaccines and drugs for Hepatitis C.

"Bushmeat" that is, wild monkeys killed in the trees and sold for meat, has been credited for previous outbreaks of Ebola

It's not about sex with monkeys but rather the handling of dead monkeys.

Or playing with a pet monkey could cause transmission

The accounts of human to human transmission at a funeral is also consistent with previous outbreaks. These are not western style funerals but traditional practices where the corpse is kept at home for a wake and relatives kiss and hold the deceased

Mabus then will soon die, there will come
Of people and beasts a horrible rout:
Then suddenly one will see vengeance,
Hundred, hand, thirst, hunger when the comet will run.--- Century II, Quatrain 62, The Book of Nostradamus

Just noticed the first letters spell out the word "MOTH"...which immediately made me think of Mothman...hmmmmm...any comets coming this way soon?

Sorry...carry on.

This has nothing to do then with the recently exposed ancient virus in a lab.

Was it a hint of something gone wrong?
