Tekmira's Chief Technical Officer, Dr. Ian MacLachlan, presented new preclinical data showing 100% survival was achieved when dosing with TKM-Marburg at 0.5 mg/kg began 72 hours after infection with otherwise lethal quantities of the Marburg virus. Dosing then continued once daily for seven days. Earlier data from this collaborative research between Tekmira and the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) showed 100% survival was achieved when dosing at 0.5 mg/kg TKM-Marburg began either one hour, 24 hours, or 48 hours after infection with otherwise lethal quantities of the virus. These studies represent the first known demonstration of protection of non-human primates from Marburg-Angola, the most lethal strain of Marburg virus. More importantly, there is healing, confirmed by analysis of two people with Ebola in Conakry. These people may leave the hospital where they were Kipé isolation.

How serendipitous for Tekmira and shareholders, to have an "unexpected outbreak" of Ebola at this precise time.

I believe it was yesterday they were looking for 375 exposed individuals, but today they are monitoring just under 400 cases. They must have one heck of investigation team that works at night.

The latest victim, according to the Health Ministry’s authorities, reportedly traveled from Foya in Lofa County to Chicken Soup Factory in Monrovia and then to Harbel in Firestone before she was quarantined. They disclosed that the deceased traveled with her daughter, who it is now assumed contracted the virus from her mother after coming down with its symptoms.

Lassa fever travels to Minnesota from West Africa


A patient in a Minnesota hospital is confirmed to be carrying Lassa fever, an acute viral disease common in West Africa but rare in the U.S. The man who had traveled from West Africa was hospitalized with fever and confusion. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's study of blood samples confirmed Lassa fever, which is similar to Ebola. The last case of the disease in the United States was in 2010.

Not unexpected at all. I read the original French account, and the above translation gets the general jist of it. In colloquial English:

Locals vandalised a MSF drug warehouse because they think that MSF is doing the killing rather than Ebola doing the killing. To clarify, there was both a "manifestation" or public protest AND vandalism of the medical warehouse. This wasn't isolated vandals sneaking in at night, but a popular uprising which included destruction to the warehouse .

It's not like somebody spray painted the outside of the building -- but there is no clarification how many people were involved or how much damage was caused

Lassa fever confirmed in traveler returning to Minnesota from West Africa

On March 31, 2014, a man returning to Minnesota from West Africa was admitted to a hospital in Minnesota with fever and confusion. Blood samples submitted to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tested positive for Lassa fever on the evening of April 3. Lassa fever is an acute viral disease common in West Africa but rarely seen in the U.S. The last case of Lassa fever in the United States was in 2010 and was travel-related.
