Once there was an explosion that killed the entire town and leveled the buildings. There was/is a superfund site there. If you live in Texas City you live with doom looking over your shoulder every single day. |

You have people reporting ships backing up about a week ago. They you had some sort of crash incident off Houston I think it was like a week or two ago and now this?? Pretty weird. Quoting: cashmire 26300532 The "backing up" of ships was due to the heavy amounts of fog. Have you ever tried to maneuver a 200 ton ship with no visibility in a winding channel? Didn't think so. Accidents happen. The shipping traffic is insanely increasing. There is also the start of new projects to increase the port by more than 100 more terminals. That is why they are currently dredging the channel to widen it. Gotta make room for more ships. |

However, this topic is not important and dead because there is nothing to report. Just a small grind in two hulls. Nothing worth being alarmed about. tiny amount of oil in the water. This should be unpinned. Its dead. |

OP (OP) User ID: 48840745 United States 03/22/2014 09:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Once again, thanks for all the replies & concerns being expressed by you all for us living in Texas. Sad to say this, but the truth is this: any incident involving this important Port / Petrochemical area may quickly lead to having serious secondary impacts, not only for those folks in USA but also our military too -- and global implications too. I've got close relatives & friends living in the Houston region, including Galveston too; our family makes frequent trips down there from DFW area so very familiar with area & past history (and lots of scary stuff about the chemical plants / refineries, etc). Any incident like this one causes us to immediately take notice & think about what else could happen as a secondary event = take precautions, make plans for a potential mass-disaster event, so on. FYI: for those wanting to know more about importance of the Houston Ship Channel & Port (= where much of our gasoline in the USA is produced...) see links below: THE PORT OF HOUSTON [link to en.wikipedia.org] [Quote Snips: -> "The Port of Houston, is a port in Houston, the fourth-largest city in the United States. It is the busiest port in the United States in terms of foreign tonnage, second-busiest in the United States in terms of overall tonnage, and thirteenth-busiest in the world.[2] -> Though originally the port's terminals were primarily within the Houston city limits, the port has expanded to such a degree that today it has facilities in multiple communities in the surrounding area. In particular the port's busiest terminal, the Barbours Cut Terminal, is located in Morgan's Point. -> The Port of Houston is a cooperative entity consisting of both the port authority, which operates the major terminals along the Houston Ship Channel, and more than 150 private companies situated along Buffalo Bayou and Galveston Bay.[3] -> Many petroleum corporations have built refineries along the channel where they are partially protected from the threat of major storms in the Gulf of Mexico. -> *** The petrochemical complex associated with the Port of Houston is one of the largest in the world.[4] *** ***{Take special note of this fact!!!}*** [// End Quote =========================== Houston Ship Channel - Wikipedia [link to en.wikipedia.org] (This page give history about the channel itself & various locations along it, etc) ============================ Texas City disaster [link to en.wikipedia.org] Quote Snips: For the 2005 oil refinery fire, see Texas City Refinery (BP). -> The Texas City disaster of April 16, 1947 was the deadliest industrial accident in U.S. history, and one of the largest non-nuclear explosions. -> The Grandcamp (ship) explosion destroyed the Monsanto Chemical Company plant and resulted in ignition of refineries and chemical tanks on the waterfront... the Grandcamp's anchor was hurled across the city. Two sightseeing airplanes flying nearby had their wings shorn off,[6] forcing them out of the sky. 10 miles (16 km) away, people in Galveston were forced to their knees; windows were shattered in Houston, Texas, 40 miles (60 km) away. People felt the shock 100 miles (160 km) away in Louisiana. The explosion blew almost 6,350 short tons (5,760 metric tons) of the ship's steel into the air, some at supersonic speed. [// End Quote =========================== If you take time to read the account of the 1947 Texas City Disaster above (+ many other links online too), you will understand why native Texans cringe to hear news any time that there's been some sort of marine accident or chemical incident in the Houston Ship Channel,,, but especially if it involves *** TEXAS CITY *** !!! |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 48840745 United States 03/22/2014 10:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Joint response underway for ship, barge collision in Houston Ship Channel Quoting: Jynger COAST GUARD RELEASE At approximately 12:35 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston received a call from the captain of the 585-foot bulk carrier Summer Wind, reporting a collision between the Summer Wind and a barge, containing 924,000 gallons of fuel oil, towed by the motor vessel Miss Susan. The motor vessel Miss Susan was transiting from Texas City to Bolivar at the time of the collision. Kirby Inland Marine, owner of the motor vessel Miss Susan and the barges, activated its emergency response plan immediately and is working in a unified response with the Coast Guard and the Texas General Land Office, which are on scene. More at link: [link to www.yourhoustonnews.com] WOW - I worked for Kirby Inland Marine for 5 years. I bet my former coworkers are not impressed.... Thank you very much to everyone for replies made + the photo of a nasty oil blob on a beach (hopefully not from today??) Jynger, your article from the Coast Guard via the 'Your Houston News' site ( [link to www.yourhoustonnews.com] ) is most informative. However, am confused about details & maybe you can help us understand more & what's really involved... especially since you worked in that industry & am assuming live in that region too? My questions so far: 1. There is the "Summer Wind" = a 585-foot Bulk Carrier + 2nd, one is termed as a Motor Vessel with name of "Miss Susan" + a Barge = 3 separate vessels involved, right? Does the barge not have a motor too or ???? 2. Am uncertain about how much oil is involved after reading the 2 news articles linked above. So, the article snips I posted from The Houston Chronicle says "The barge was carrying about 22,000 gallons of oil..." yet the article you've posted from The Coast Guard Release says, "... a collision between the Summer Wind and a barge, containing 924,000 gallons of fuel oil" << so which one is correct (am thinking surely Coast Guard would be more accuract!). 3. Also, am I understanding correctly that the oil that's leaking was being towed or pushed in a barge by the Miss Susan vessel (like a tugboat or whatever they are called nowadays?) ?? TIA ================================================== The Miss Susan is a tug boat. The barge that was hit does not have a motor. From what I can tell, The Summer Wind hit the barge that was being towed by Miss Susan. According to a recent report, only one tank from the barge is leaking, so that is good news. Only a portion of the 924,000 gallons is leaking into the channel. THANK YOU TO JYNARD .. very much! Am glad to hear that there's only one tank leaking per your report. Please do update this thread if you get more information as soon must get ready for some sleep tonight. I sincerely hope & pray that this incident is easily resolved and doesn't cause problems or other repercussions later on. For those ones who think this is not much of an event, I do agree that it may end up being fairly minor in the scheme of things... however, we must all be observant, vigilant / diligent about what's really going on in our surroundings. From the threads I read here earlier today, especially regarding the situation in Crimea & Ukraine, things are sounding quite serious now and yet the media focus is still zeroed in on the missing Malaysian airplane & all the theories / shreds of evidence (CNN is getting REALLY weird, imho = am a bit suspicious that their nonstop coverage is being used as a big distractor to keep public attention away from the *real* stuff going on / covert operations or ???? Apologize I've been slow in responding to some of you but did need a bite of supper. And I'm not logged in cause am afraid of being banned again & having to pay my membership fee since it recently expired & so been trying to hold out. And yes, I'm well schooled on the BP disaster, but...what the hell is this? p.s. I live in Texas...with family on the Gulf...and I never once saw this photo or heard anything out of the ordinary. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55960449 If the channel is shut down does the economy begin to buckle? Will the illegals strip the boats for parts and build a Mexican Navy to menace Socal bay communities? Did a little quick reading on the Port and it seems fairly important. One of the largest ports for the US, and from what I understand a LOT of our oil comes through there. Yes, it is? Better fill up the gas tank now. By Monday we could see $4.00 at the pumps. |

TIA You were not supposed to notice all of that! All is well. A very minor spill, nothing to worry about. No, the fishing in the area is perfectly fine. The fish will not become toxic in the presence of the several million gallons of Corexit 9500 they will use to create a gigantic tar ball just under the surface. |

We had to take it inside, the smell was horrible. Then everyone just had to leave. Not sure how it is now but getting home was a mess as well. Everything is closed until further notice. Ship channel and everything around it. you're nearly a laugh, but you're really a cry. |
